Numerical evaluation of the modulus of longitudinal elasticity in structural round timber elements of the Eucalyptus genus

Abstract: Currently, the standards that deal with the determination of the properties of rigidity and strength for structural round timber elements do not take in consideration in their calculations and mathematical models the influence of the existing irregularities in the geometry of these elements. This study has as objective to determine the effective value of the modulus of longitudinal elasticity for structural round timber pieces of the Eucalyptus citriodora genus by a technique of optimization allied to the Inve… Show more

“…This can induce to doubts in structural design and someone can take calculation assumptions that lead to imprecise estimation of stresses, as asserted by Bodig and Jayne (1982), Calil Junior, Lahr, and Dias (2003), Karlsen (1967), Mateus (1961), and Ritter (1990). Know values of longitudinal modulus of elasticity (E) and shear modulus (G) is essential for proper evaluation of plate structures performance, as example, according to Christoforo, Panzera, Batista, Borges, and Lahr (2011), Herzog, Natterer, Schweitzer, Votz, and Winter (2000), among others.…”

“…The use of wood has grown over the last few years, because it is a material of renewable source, low density and good mechanical performance, usually used in civil and rural buildings, performing the structural role as beam elements, columns and others (CHRISTOFORO, 2011).…”
