The infiltration of water into the soil is a necessary parameter for irrigation systems design. Characterizing its spatial behavior allows a site-specific management of water according to soil conditions and crop requirements. The aim of this study is to establish the spatial distribution of infiltration in an Andisol by means of two geostatistical approaches: on the one hand by means of functional kriging, taking as input infiltration curves (obtained after a smoothing stage), and on the other hand by using classical ordinary kriging on the parameters of the Kostiakov and Phillip models. The comparison between these methodologies is carried out taking as a criterion the sum of squared errors of a leave-one-out cross-validation analysis. The results show a high correlation between observations and predictions (R 2 values around 99%), which indicates that the use of functional geostatistics in this context could be a good alternative. Moreover, from a descriptive point of view, we can point out that the contour maps of basic infiltration (BI), cumulative infiltration (Ci), saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ks), and sorptivity (S) obtained with the observed data, as well as the predictions by functional geostatistics, show a very similar behavior, which empirically validates the use of this methodology.

La velocidad de infiltración básica (Vib) es un parámetro importante para planificar sistemas de irrigación; sin embargo, este parámetro se desconoce en la mayoría de suelos de ladera del Valle del Cauca, Colombia. Por tal razón, el objetivo de esta investigación fue determinar la Vib en tres zonas de ladera usando una nueva adaptación de goteros tipo Mariotte de bajo volumen de trabajo, a partir del área mojada y el caudal del gotero diseñado. La experimentación se desarrolló en tres zonas de ladera de Roldanillo, Dagua y Pradera en el Valle del Cauca, en cultivos de aguacate Hass, piña MD-2 y mora, respectivamente. Los suelos se clasificaron en: franco-limoso, arcilloso y arcillo-limoso, respectivamente. Se aplicaron láminas de agua de 2, 3, 3.5 y 4 litros usando el principio de gotero Mariotte y se distribuyeron a partir de un diseño completo al azar en cada finca. Se obtuvo el área mojada (Am) de cada una de las láminas aplicadas usando un software de procesamiento de imágenes. Se encontró que la longitud del diámetro de humedecimiento tiende a estabilizarse a partir de 2.26 litros a +/- 20 cm de profundidad, por lo que se estimaron velocidades de infiltración básica utilizando el modelo empírico de Kostiakov de 38.00 mm hr-1, 1.29 mm hr-1 y 1.40 mm hr-1 para cada zona de estudio. Se comprobó la relación entre el área de humedecimiento y el caudal aplicado por los goteros asociados a la velocidad de infiltración instantánea (vii).

Water infiltration into soil is one of the basic factors for estimating irrigation intensity according to the plants' requirements; this is aimed at avoiding problems of surface run-off and degradation. The purpose of the present investigation was to determine the spatial variation of infiltration and its relationship to some physical properties of soil by means of geostatistical techniques in Typic Plinthaquult soils having average texture and flat relief. A 113-point mesh was designed, having a regular distance of 10 m between points, samples being taken from 0 to 0.20 meters depth. Sand, silt and clay content, bulk density, macroporosity, microporosity and total porosity were determined. Infiltration tests were carried out in the field by means of a 15 cm diameter ring. Descriptive statistics and geostatistics were used for analysing the data. Infiltration, silt and microporosity data did not fit a normal distribution curve. Infiltration had high variability, having an average 36.03 mm h-1. Total porosity was 56.73%, this being the only property that did not show spatial dependency. The smallest ranges were observed for bulk density, macroporosity and microporosity, having values of less than 40 m. The smallest degrees of spatial dependence were observed for infiltration, silt and clay, evidence also being shown of the influence of silt and clay on infiltration rate. Contour maps were constructed; fitting them to the semivariogram models, together with studying the correlations, led to establishing relationships between the properties.
