Eucalyptus plants are sensitive to abiotic stresses in their initial growth, and nutritional deficiency is one of the most recurrent among them. Trinexapac-ethyl, which is a plant growth regulator, can positively affect eucalyptus, a response known as hormesis, possibly providing plants with greater tolerance to stress. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of trinexapac-ethyl at two application times, before planting (BP) or after planting (AP), in Eucalyptus urophylla under conditions of nutritional deficiency (NPK). Two experiments (one for each application time) were conducted simultaneously during 81 days after planting of eucalyptus in 15 L pots. The treatments consisted of three doses of trinexapac-ethyl (0, 30, and 60 g a.i.·ha−1) and four variations of nutrient supply: complete solution (NPK) and solutions without nitrogen (−N), without phosphorus (−P), and without potassium (−K). The variables of gas exchange, growth, and dry matter were evaluated. For both application times, trinexapac-ethyl had a positive effect on the root–shoot ratio of plants grown in −N and also positively affected some eucalyptus photosynthetic characteristics. In the AP application, the compound provided gains in height and dry matter, regardless of the nutrient supply. Under phosphorus deficiency, trinexapac-ethyl provided gains in total dry matter (BP) and leaf area (AP).

-To ensure the maximum forestry productivity the adoption of efficient managements is essential. Weed control is very important, since presence of weeds can lead to competition for key factors to plant development. Weed interference can cause losses of up to 50 % in productivity and over 90 % of reduction in the profitability of forestry areas. Chemical control is widely used in weed management and about 30 % of the total costs of production and up to 50 % of the work force used in eucalypt crop cycle are intended for this purpose. Brazilian forestry sector has great economic expressiveness, but there are few herbicides registered. Chemical weed control should still fit the standards required by eucalypt certifications. The expansion of sector and the economic importance of this crop in Brazil make necessary the development of new herbicides and new spraying techniques to increase herbicides efficiency, new research, as well as encouraging adoption of an integrated weed management plan in eucalypt. Keywords: Eucalyptus; glyphosate; reforestation; weed competition; weed management Resumo -Para garantir a máxima produtividade florestal, a adoção de um manejo eficiente é essencial. O controle de plantas daninhas é muito importante, já que a presença dessas pode ocasionar competição por fatores fundamentais ao desenvolvimento das plantas. A interferência das plantas daninhas pode ocasionar perdas de até 50 % na produtividade e mais de 90 % de redução na rentabilidade das áreas florestais. O controle químico é amplamente utilizado no manejo das plantas daninhas, e cerca de 30 % dos custos totais de produção e mais de 50 % da mão-de-obra utilizada na cultura do eucalipto são destinadas para esse propósito. O setor florestal tem uma grande expressividade econômica, mas poucos herbicidas são registrados. O controle químico ainda deve se encaixar aos padrões requeridos pelas certificadoras. A expansão do setor e a importância econômica do eucalipto no Brasil fazem necessário o desenvolvimento de novos herbicidas, novas tecnologias de aplicação, novas pesquisas, bem como a adoção de um plano de manejo integrado de plantas daninhas em eucalipto.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the selectivity of fluazifop-p-butyl and haloxyfop-R methyl ester on Eucalyptus urograndis (clone GG100), as well as the use of fluazifop-p-butyl for control of Panicum maximum and Urochloa brizantha. Two experiments were conducted in 15-liter capacity pots, in a completely randomized design with four replications. The first experiment consisted of seven treatments, in which fluazifop-p-butyl and haloxyfop-R methyl ester were sprayed at 15, 30 and 37 days after planting (DAP) and a control plot without application. In the second experiment, the treatments consisted of a factorial 4 × 2 (four application periods and two weed species), in which three seedlings of P. maximum or U. brizantha were transplanted per pot. In both experiments, at 90 DAP, plant height, stem diameter, leaf area and total dry matter of eucalyptus were evaluated. In the second experiment, besides the morphological parameters, the percentage of weed control was evaluated. The data was submitted to analysis of variance by F test, and the means compared by Tukey test at the level of 5% of probability. Both herbicides did not cause visual effects of phytointoxication in eucalyptus, but haloxyfop-R methyl ester was not selective to clone GG100 (E. urograndis). Fluazifop-p-butyl was selective to clone GG100, providing better control in the first application period (15 DAP) but only for P. maximum, which negatively affected the initial development of eucalyptus, while U. brizantha was not efficiently controlled with the usage of fluazifop-p-butyl.
