Araucaria angustifolia is an ecologically and commercially important species of the Atlantic Forest. However, its ability to regenerate continuously under the shade of the canopy in the rainforest is uncertain. The aims were: to evaluate the morpho-physiological responses of araucaria to different intensities of canopy coverage to know its shade acclimation capacity; and to evaluate survival and growth under different shade intensities in gaps. First, seedlings were grown in pots at full sun or under canopy shade and morphophysiological traits were measured after 6 and 12 months. Survival was 100 % under full sun and 40 % under shade. One year after planting, the ability to use high-intensity light was similar in plants under both conditions, although shade plants did not grow and showed little capacity to acclimate to shade. Plants under full sun duplicated their size in six months and had higher capacity to deliver water to the leaves. However, shade plants had higher specific hydraulic conductance. After that, in a field experiment, seedlings were planted in six forest-gaps to record survival and growth for 30 months. Survival was high in all positions within the gaps. In the center of the gaps, where incident radiation was higher, growth was higher. We conclude that araucaria has low ability to acclimate to low radiation, nevertheless, it can survive at least 30 months under the canopy. Consequently, araucaria should not be planted below dense canopy shade. The microenvironment in the center of 195-293 m 2 gaps is proper for araucaria growth. RESUMENAraucaria angustifolia (araucaria) es una especie del Bosque Atlántico de importancia ecológica y comercial, pero su capacidad para regenerar continuamente bajo dosel es incierta. Los objetivos fueron: evaluar la respuesta morfo-fisiológica de araucaria a diferentes intensidades de cobertura de dosel para conocer su capacidad de aclimatación; y evaluar supervivencia y crecimiento bajo diferentes niveles de cobertura durante su establecimiento en claros del Bosque Atlántico. En experimentos en maceta, plantas jóvenes fueron expuestas a sol pleno y bajo sombra del dosel y se hicieron mediciones morfo-fisiológicas seis y 12 meses después de plantadas. La supervivencia fue 100 % a sol pleno y 40 % bajo sombra. Un año luego de plantar, las plantas tuvieron similar capacidad para usar luz de alta intensidad, pero bajo sombra no crecieron y demostraron baja capacidad de aclimatación a la sombra. Las plantas a sol pleno duplicaron su tamaño en seis meses y presentaron mayor capacidad para conducir agua hacia las hojas. Las plantas bajo sombra presentaron mayor conductividad hidráulica específica. En experimento a campo se plantó araucaria en seis claros del bosque y se registró supervivencia y crecimiento durante 30 meses. La supervivencia fue alta y no se asoció a la posición de las plantas dentro del claro. Los mayores crecimientos se registraron en el centro de los claros. Since the enactment of Law No. 11,428/06, an expectation was created as to whether more restricted rules on the use and conservation of the Atlantic Forest Biome would be sufficient to reduce deforestation. In the same sense, the inspection bodies stood out due to their responsibility in the application of this important legal instrument. In this context, the objectives of this study were: 1) to analyze the history of deforestation in the Planalto Serrano of the State of Santa Catarina, whose forest covered area is characterized by the Mixed Ombrophilous Forest, after the validity of Law 11,428/06; 2) to verify the application of the Law in the occurrence of deforestation, and 3) to identify the reasons for deforestation. A documentary research was carried out on 543 criminal procedures instituted by the Environmental Military Police for deforestation between December 2006 and December 2015. From each criminal case the following data were extracted: date, number of occurrences per year and municipality, size, successional stage of the deforested area, motive and land use of deforested areas. The results indicated that there was an accentuated reduction of 58% in the number of deforestation between 2007 and 2015. However, the selective cutting of Araucaria angustifolia (Bertol.) Kuntze was predominant with a percentage of 62.07% of the total number of occurrences. It was also verified that 71.46% of deforestation reached the middle stage of forest regeneration. In most case (33%), the reason for deforestation was for commercial purposes. The law for the protection of the Atlantic Forest Biome, conjunctly with the inspection, contributed to reduce deforestation and the cut of araucarias. Nevertheless, advancements are still needed, especially in the recovery of deforested areas, since only 28% of deforested areas were effectively restored.

A destruição de habitats atrelada à fragmentação causa sérias consequências para qualquer tipo de vegetação, principalmente para a Mata Atlântica na Região Nordeste. Os Brejos de Altitudes Nordestinos são áreas que apresentam microclimas dissociantes das extensões onde estão inseridos. O conhecimento do potencial de regeneração natural é fundamental para a compreensão da dinâmica da vegetação. Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar a o recrutamento e a mortalidade de regenerantes de Anadenanthera colubrina ocorrente em fragmento florestal de Floresta Ombrófila Aberta. Em uma população de A. colubrina as parcelas foram demarcadas, onde existiam plantas matrizes, com plântulas regenerantes, sendo 10 parcelas fixas (10 m x 10 m), onde todos os exemplares dessa espécie menor ou igual a 1 m de altura foram marcados, numerados e acompanhados durante 9 meses. O diâmetro caulinar do táxon apresentou crescimento constante. O incremento médio mensal inicial em diâmetro foi de 1,8 mm e final de 2,3 mm e o incremento médio em altura foi de 20 cm no primeiro mês e 25,9 cm no último mês avaliado. A taxa de mortalidade chegou a 50%. Os fatores ambientais e antrópicos e a predação das sementes contribuem para a mortalidade dos regenerantes.Structure of natural regeneration in Anadenanthera colubrina altitude swamp fragment in Bananeiras, PB, BrazilThe habitats destruction linked to fragmentation causes serious consequences for vegetation in general, especially considering the Northeast Atlantic Forest. The Northeastern Swamps of Altitudes are areas with microclimates dissociating from extensions where they are inserted. Knowledge of the natural regeneration potential is the key to understanding the dynamics of vegetation. The study aimed to evaluate the recruitment and mortality of Anadenanthera colubrina regenerating occurring in Open Rain Forest fragments. In a population of A. colubrina, ten plots with 10 m x 10 m were established, near matrices plants. All specimens with 1 m height or lower were numbered and monitored for 9 months. The stem diameter of the taxon showed continuous growth. The monthly average increment in diameter was at first 1.8 mm and at the end 2.3 mm, and the average stem increment in height was 20 cm at the first month and 25.9 cm at the last month evaluate. The mortality rate reached 50%. Environmental and anthropogenic factors and seed predation contribute to mortality of regenerating individuals.Index terms: Abiotic factors; Recruitment; Mortality
