The wood-based panel industry is growing all over the world, and in many countries the raw material is becoming increasingly inadequate and increasingly expensive. Therefore, new inputs are needed to reduce production costs. The residue of babassu palm fruit after nut extraction process is an alternative, due to its fibrous characteristics, the high availability in the large agroindustrial complexes in the North of Brazil and the low cost. Thus the research was: (i) to determine the mechanical characteristics (tensile strength and elasticity), physicochemical characteristics (density, pH, extractives content and chemical composition) and micro-structural of the babassu residue, comparing it with the particles of Pinus sp., used in commercial panels; (ii) to evaluate the quality of panels manufactured with babassu residue by physical conditions (swelling in thickness and water absorption) and mechanical characterization (elasticity and rupture) based on Brazilian Technical Standards (NBR 14810-2: 2013), American (ANSI A208.1: 2009) and European (EN 312: 2003). Statistical analysis of the data was performed with the aid of Infostat software through analysis of variance using Tukey test at the 5% probability level. The babassu residue has technological characteristics that allow its use in particleboard production. However, there are particularities that may compromise its use, such as high silica content and high density. Particleboard made from babassu residue presented mechanical performance above that required by current normative documents. However, for the physical properties, especially for the porosity of the particleboard of babassu, the obtained values were lower than the required minimum.

RESUMOA produção de painéis aglomerados no mundo é sustentada pelas espécies de Pinus spp. e Eucalyptus spp. Todavia, o uso de resíduos de epicarpo e endocarpo provenientes do processo de extração da amêndoa do coco babaçu pode ser uma alternativa de matéria prima à baixo custo. Nessa pesquisa, objetivou-se avaliar a viabilidade técnica de utilização destes resíduos na produção de painéis aglomerados. Foram produzidos painéis 100% epicarpo (100EP), 100% endocarpo (100EN) e 50% epicarpo com 50% endocarpo (50EP) aglutinados com resina poliuretana bicomponente à base de óleo de mamona com um teor de 12% em relação ao peso seco das partículas. A avaliação dos painéis produzidos foi realizada com base nos procedimentos das Normas Técnicas NBR 14810-2 (ABNT, 2013) e ANSI A208.1 (ANSI, 2009) com caracterização física (densidade, inchamento em espessura e absorção de água em 2 e 24 h) e mecânica (adesão interna, módulo de elasticidade e módulo de ruptura na flexão estática). Os resultados obtidos nesta pesquisa indicam a inviabilidade técnica de utilização dos resíduos do coco babaçu na produção de painéis aglomerados, pois não atendem os valores mínimos de propriedades físicas exigidos pelos documentos normativos. No entanto, promovem excelente desempenho mecânico, especialmente o epicarpo do coco babaçu. This research, objective was to assess the technical feasibility of using these residues in the production of particleboard. The panels were produced: 100% epicarp (100EP), 100% endocarp (100EN) and 50% epicarp 50% endocarp (50EP) bonded with polyurethane bi-component resin castor oil base with a 12% content on dry weight the particle. The evaluation of particleboard produced was based on the procedures of NBR Technical Standards 14810-2:2013 and ANSI A208.1:2009 with physical characteristics (density, thickness swelling and water absorption at 2 and 24 h) and mechanical (internal adhesion, modulus of elasticity and modulus of rupture in bending). The results obtained in this research indicate the technical impossibility of using residues of babassu coconut in the production of agglomerated panels, since they do not meet the minimum values of physical properties required by normative documents. However, they promote excellent mechanical performance, especially the babassu coconut epicarp.

Various scientific names are usually found for the babassu in current literature: mainly Orbignya phalerata and Attalea speciosa, but also O. speciosa and O. martiana, among others. This multiplicity of names leads to great confusion in the scientific community causing mistakes to be successively propagated. This note aims to clarify the problem, reviewing the species nomenclature history since the first description by Martius, in 1826, and reporting the successive name changes which occurred. Consequences of the lumping of four closely related genera, of recent phylogenetic studies and of the last changes in palm classification on the species nomenclature are also briefly discussed. In addition, searching results on scientific names at the main Plant Name Indexes are presented here. As a conclusion, we recommend the adoption of Attalea speciosa Mart ex. Spreng as the most suitable name for the babassu and highlight that a broad taxonomic review of the Attalea group is necessary. Key words: Attalea speciosa, Arecaceae, babassu, Orbignya phalerata, taxonomy. ResumoNa literatura científica atual são encontrados artigos que utilizam diferentes nomes científicos para o babaçu, principalmente Orbignya phalerata e Attalea speciosa, mas também O. speciosa, O. martiana, entre outros. Esta multiplicidade de nomes ocasiona uma grande confusão na comunidade científica que permite a propagação sucessiva de erros. Este artigo de opinião objetiva esclarecer aspectos deste problema, revisando a história da nomenclatura da espécie, desde a primeira descrição por Martius, em 1826, e evidenciando as sucessivas mudanças de nome que ocorreram. São também brevemente discutidas as consequências da fusão dos quatro gêneros relacionados, de recentes trabalhos de filogenia e das últimas mudanças em classificação de palmeiras para a nomenclatura da espécie. Adicionalmente, os resultados de buscas em Índices de Nomes de Plantas são apresentados. Como conclusão, recomendamos a adoção do nome Attalea speciosa Mart ex. Spreng como o mais adequado para o babaçu e frisamos a forte necessidade de uma ampla revisão taxonômica do grupo.
