The forest species are frequent targets of diseases. In this context, the plant-parasitic algae comprise a separate group in this process, including the algae genus Cephaleuros, which attacks mahogany cultivars. The objective of this work was to accomplish the molecular and morphological characterization of the causal agent of algae spots occurring in Brazilian mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla). Somatic and reproductive algae structures contained in lesions on the leaves had the DNA extracted and amplified by primers 18SHf and 18SLr of the rRNA nuclear gene 18S. Then, the amplicons were purified and sequenced. The algae structures too were characterized under light microscope. In addition, a total of 12 injured leaves located in the lower third of each attacked tree were randomly extracted for lesion characterization according to its size and number. After algae structures measurements, sporangiophores and sporangia had 260.2 x 12.9 μm and 25 x 18.8 μm. These measurements, combined with the molecular identification, indicated that the algae found in Brazilian mahogany leaves is C. virescens. Attacked leaves showed an average of 33 lesions, 60% of which were smaller than 2 mm in diameter, which shows great capacity of the pathogen to reach different parts of the foliar limb. These measurements, combined with molecular identification, confirmed the algae found in Brazilian mahogany leaves to be C. virescens.

African mahogany is an exotic specie and its cultivation has increased in Brazil due to the high value of its timber on the international market. Nutrition with nitrogen is an important factor for species with high biomass production and specific studies on this species are essential. The present study aimed to assess the initial growth of African mahogany plants submitted to nitrogen fertilization. The experiment was set up and carried out in a greenhouse, with 7 dm3 plastic pots using a oxisoil sampled from the surface layer. A completely randomized experimental design was used with five treatments and six replications. The treatments consisted of five N levels: 0, 40, 80, 120 and 160 mg dm-3, using urea as the source. The following were assessed at 180 days: height, stem diameter, leaf, stem, root and total dry matter, N content in the leaves in the African mahogany leaves. The African mahogany seedlings had high N demand and responded positively to the N used and the growth variables was positive with increase in N level. However, as it presented increasing linear effect, the N level can not be estimated, that would provide the maximum initial development for this plant species.

DEFICIÊNCIA DE MACRO E MICRONUTRIENTES EM MUDAS MADURAS DE KHAYA IVORENSIS ESTUDADAS EM VIVEIRORESUMO: O mogno africano (Khaya ivorensis) é uma essência florestal de alto valor e de grande potencial para substituir o mogno brasileiro (Swietenia macrophylla). Atualmente, pouco se conhece a respeito das exigências nutricionais do mogno africano. Nesse sentido, o presente trabalho teve o objetivo de avaliar o desenvolvimento e a composição mineral de plantas de K. ivorensis submetidas à omissão de macro e micronutrientes. Para isso, realizou-se experimento com solução nutritiva, com os tratamentos: T1-Solução completa; T2-omissão de nitrogênio; T3-omissão de fósforo; T4-omissão de potássio; T5-omissão de cálcio; T6-omissão de magnésio; T7-omissão de enxofre; T8-omissão de ferro; T9-omissão de boro; T10-omissão de cobre; T11-com omissão de manganês; T12-com omissão de zinco; T13-com omissão de molibdênio e T14-água deionizada. As avaliações foram realizadas a partir de mudas comerciais prontas para o plantio, que permaneceram em casa de vegetação sendo irrigadas apenas com água deionizada. Após quinze dias as plantas passaram a receber diariamente 200 ml de solução nutritiva. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi inteiramente casualizado com quatorze tratamentos e dez repetições. Os dados dendrológicos foram descritos a cada quinze dias até tornaremse bem definidos. As plantas tiveram desenvolvimento afetado apenas pela omissão de N, exibindo menores teores foliares do elemento. As omissões dos demais nutrientes afetaram levemente o desenvolvimento das plantas. For this, we carried out a experiment with nutrient solution with the following treatments: T1-Complete Solution; T2-omission of nitrogen; T3-omission of phosphorus; T4-omission of potassium; T5-omission of calcium; T6-omission of magnesium; T7-omission of sulfur; T8-omission of iron; T9-omission of boron; T10-omission of copper; T11-omission of manganese; T12-omission of zinc; T13-omission of molybdenum; and T14-deionized water. The evaluations were carried out based on commercial seedlings ready for planting, which remained in a greenhouse, irrigated only with deionized water. After fifteen days, the plants started to receive 200 ml of nutrient solution daily. The experimental design used was completely randomized with fourteen treatments and ten replications. The dendrological data were collected every fifteen days until they became well defined.
