A simple spectrophotometric method for the determination of tetracycline and doxycycline in pharmaceutical formulations using chloramine-T

Abstract: A simple, rapid, accurate and inexpensive spectrophotometric method for the determination of tetracycline and doxycycline has been developed. The method is based on the reaction between these drugs and chloramine-T in alkaline medium producing red color products with absorbance maximum at the ë = 535 and 525 nm for the tetracycline and doxycycline, respectively. The best conditions for the reactions have been found using mol L and 7.12 x 10 mol L for the tetracycline and doxycycline, respectively. The proposed… Show more

“…The detection limit was determined to be 117 nM (52 µg/kg) and the linear region was between 0.2 µM and 6 µM. Compared to other methods reported for doxycycline detection, such as fluorescence (LOD: 110 nM; 49 µg/kg) [28], electrochemical (LOD: 43.5 µM; 19.3 mg/kg) [29] and spectrophotometric (LOD: 710 nM; 315 µg/kg) [30] sensors, our multifunctional FMIPs demonstrated comparable or higher sensitivity.…”

“…Coulomb attraction holds oppositely charged ions together in solution in the ion-pair complex [ 56 ]. Some antibiotics have been analyzed using spectrophotometric methods including amoxicillin [ 40 ], azithromycin [ 41 , 57 ], tetracycline, doxycycline [ 58 ], and cefixime trihydrate [ 59 ]. They have also been used to analyze gentamicin sulfate [ 60 ], cefadroxil, ceftazidime, cefazolin sodium, cefoperazone sodium, cefaclor, cephaprin sodium, cefotaxime sodium, and cefuroxime sodium [ 61 ].…”

“…The method was based on the formation of blue colored chromogen measured at λ max 770 nm due to reduction of tungstate and/or molybdate in Folin-Ciocalteu reagent by doxycycline in alkaline medium. [122] Rufino et al, [123] described a simple spectrophotometric method for the determination of doxycycline. The method was based on the reaction between the drug and chloramine T in alkaline medium; producing red color with maximum absorbance at λ max 525 nm.…”
