Show more

“…The bacterium was cultured on nutrient yeast-extract dextrose agar (NYDA) medium (Pusey and Wilson 1984), and pathogenicity tests were performed on seedlings, plants, and fruits of watermelon cv. Charleston Gray (Araújo et al 2005;Silveira et al 2003;Somodi et al 1991).…”

“…RAB9 resulted in a 47% reduction in disease progress and a 35% increase in the incubation period (Table 1), thus showing that disease reduction from biological seed treatments is comparable to the effect of chemical seed treatments with streptomycin, peroxiacetic acid, or copper hydroxide, as reviewed by Mariano and Silveira (2004). Furthermore, if we consider the fact that diseasefavorable conditions generally occur during the plant's life cycle and that the incubation period is highly dependent on the wetness duration (Silveira et al 2003), an increase in the incubation period under disease-conducive conditions such as those provided by RAB9, combined with a reduction in the AUDPC, will reduce the bacterial inoculum at the onset of flower anthesis and fruit ripening. This in turn will reduce the contamination of seeds through flowers (Walcott et al 2003) and increase the number of noninfected marketable fruits (Walcott 2008).…”
