Bacterial fruit blotch, caused by Acidovorax citrulli, is a serious threat to the watermelon crop in Brazil. To date, there are no disease-resistant varieties, thus requiring research seeking sources of resistance. To select genotypes with potential use in the management of fruit blotch, the resistance level of watermelon genotypes belonging to the Cucurbits Germplasm Active Bank for the Brazilian Northeast (Banco Ativo de Germoplasma de Cucurbitáceas para o Nordeste Brasileiro-BAG) of Embrapa Semiárido was evaluated at different plant developmental stages: seeds (74 genotypes), seedlings and plants before flowering (29 genotypes) as well as plants during flowering and fruiting (seven genotypes). The genotypes were evaluated for the incidence or severity of the disease, which was estimated with the aid of descriptive scales. Additionally, A. citrulli transmission was determined in seeds derived from symptomatic and asymptomatic fruits. No watermelon genotype was immune to fruit blotch, and the majority showed variations in resistance responses. However, the genotypes BGCIA 979, BGCIA 34 and Sugar Baby showed high levels of resistance at most stages of plant development, thereby suggesting that these genotypes possess fruit blotch resistance genes that could be used in breeding programs. Seeds from symptomatic and asymptomatic fruits of the seven tested genotypes showed transmission rates of A. citrulli up to 35.3 % and 8.7 %, respectively. These results confirm that asymptomatic fruits can harbor contaminated seeds that are responsible for the transmission of the bacteria.

“…RAB9 resulted in a 47% reduction in disease progress and a 35% increase in the incubation period (Table 1), thus showing that disease reduction from biological seed treatments is comparable to the effect of chemical seed treatments with streptomycin, peroxiacetic acid, or copper hydroxide, as reviewed by Mariano and Silveira (2004). Plant beneficial bacteria (PBB) have shown potential for disease control and are particularly important in the management of bacterial diseases, which are poorly controlled by conventional methods. In melon, bacterial fruit blotch caused by Acidovorax citrulli is a seedborne disease that is particularly destructive under certain conditions. PBB strains were screened for their ability to protect seeds and leaves from bacterial fruit blotch, and their antibiosis activity and plant colonization were studied. When Bacillus sp. RAB9 was applied to infected seeds, it reduced the area under the disease progress curve (AUDPC) by 47% and increased the incubation period (the time between inoculation and the first visible symptoms) by 35%. Three of the selected strains (JM339, MEN2 and PEP91) displayed antibiosis against A. citrulli. The RAB9 Rif-Nal mutant colonized seeds epiphytically and roots and stems endophytically. Paenibacillus lentimorbus MEN2 sprayed on melon seedlings protected leaves, and when challenged with A. citrulli, it reduced the AUDPC (by 88%), disease index (by 81%) and incidence (by 77%). Given that the production of both melon seedlings and commercially grown greenhouse melons is increasing, biocontrol strategies may well be integrated into bacterial blotch management programs.

Resumen Dentro de las enfermedades bacterianas que ataca al cultivo de melón a nivel mundial, se encuentran varias bacteriosis, en donde la más importante es la mancha bacteriana de los frutos o mancha acuosa, causada por Acidovorax avenae subsp. citrulli. Los daños pueden llegar hasta 100% de daños cuando las condiciones son ideales para el patógeno. Los síntomas de esta enfermedad son fácilmente observados en los frutos y no existe todavía medidas de control bien establecidas para su control. A pesar de eso, en esta revisión se ha tratado de colocar lo más relevante e importante en relación a la fitobacteria, incluyendo las medidas de control más utilizadas en el cultivo de melón.Palabras claves: Cucumis melo, Acidovorax avenae subsp. citrulli, estrategias de control/manejo integrado. AbstRActA mong the bacterial born diseases there are several that affect melon crop worldwide, being the bacterial spot of the fruits or aqueous stain, caused by Acidovorax avenae subsp. citrulli the most important. The losses may reach 100% damage when environmental conditions are ideal for the development of the pathogen. The symptoms of this disease are easily observed in the fruits and there is not a well established measure for their control yet. Despite that the most relevant and important information available and related to this fitobacteria, including the control measures more used in the melon production are reviewed.
