In this work, the secondary metabolite content of the EtOH extract of Kickxia spuria subsp. integrifolia (Brot.) R.Fern. is reported. Fourteen compounds were isolated and identified by means of column chromatography and NMR and MS instrumental techniques, respectively. Among the identified compounds, the chemotaxonomic markers of the species were evidenced, whereas others were reported for the first time in the genus. Among these, a new antirrhinoside derivative (12) was recognized. The iridoid content showed a molecular pattern very similar to those reported for other taxa comprised in the Antirrhinae tribe of Plantaginaceae, thus providing an additional evidence that supports the current botanical classification of the Kickxia genus. Anyway, most of the recognized components are able to exert important pharmacological properties which might suggest the possible employment of also this species in traditional medicine just like it happens for some other species of the Kickxia genus.

Scrophulariaceae is a large family, many species of which have been reported to have a wide range of biological activities and uses as folk medicines. The essential oils from species belonging to this family mainly contain monoterpene hydrocarbons, oxygenated monoterpenes, sesquiterpene hydrocarbons, oxygenated sesquiterpenes and non-terpenes. Furthermore, their essential oils have been reported to have a variety of biological activities such as antimicrobial, antioxidant, insecticidal etc. The objective of this review is to provide a brief overview of the chemical composition and biological activities of the essential oils isolated from different parts of species included in the Scrophulariaceae family. In addition, this paper also introduces the therapeutic potentials and provides the evidence for future medicinal applications of those species.

Ritmo Circadiano e Atividade Larvicida contra Aedes aegypti de Óleos Essenciais de Croton piauhiensis Resumo: Croton piauhiensis Müll. Arg., popularmente conhecido como velame, é uma espécie restrita do bioma Caatinga. Neste contexto, este trabalho tem como objetivo estudar pela primeira vez o ciclo circadiano e a atividade larvicida contra o Aedes aegypti dos óleos essenciais de C. piauhiensis. A composição química dos óleos essenciais de folhas obtidas por hidrodestilação foi analisada e identificada por GC-MS e GC-FID. De acordo com os resultados, o estudo circadiano mostrou diferenças na composição química dos óleos extraídos em diferentes horas do dia das folhas de C. piauhiensis. Os principais componentes dos óleos essenciais das folhas de C.
