Chemical constituents of methanolic extracts of Jatropha curcas L and effects on Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)

Abstract: Recebido em 14/5/12; aceito em 5/8/12; publicado na web em 26/10/12The biological activity of seven extracts from leaves of different Jatropha curcas L (Euphorbiaceae) accessions was evaluated on Spodoptera frugiperda. Methanol extracts were incorporated into an artificial diet and offered to the larval stage of S. frugiperda. The parameters evaluated were length of larval and pupal stages, mortality of larval and total cycle stage, and weight of pupae. The extracts of the EMB accessions showed the best result… Show more

“…Despite the usage of Apocynaceae species in ethnomedicine (CABI, 2020a), their use as pesticides by locals is yet to be reported. The leaf, seed, stem bark and root extracts of Jatropha curcas have been found effective (i.e., with 40 to 100% mortality) against the nymphs and larvae of P. xylostella, Helicoverpa armigera, Spodoptera frugiperda, and Schistocerca gregaria (Ribeiro et al, 2012;Bashir and El Shafie, 2013;Ingle et al, 2017). Opuba et al (2018) and Adetimehin et al (2018) showed that 3.0 g of the leaf and stem bark powders of J. curcas caused 100 percent mortality in C. maculatus in a laboratory test.…”

“…The reductions in food intake and the decrease of the ability to convert food into biomass would eventually affect the pupal weight. The antifeedant properties of the extracts of J. curcas has been shown by and Ribeiro et al (2012) on the fall armyworm S. frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). However, no previous studies reported the effect of PEEF as a compound derived from J. curcas on the pupal weight of H. armigera.…”
