A dataset of chemical properties of the elements is used herein to introduce principal components analysis (PCA). The focus in this article is to verify the classification of the elements within the periodic table. The reclassification of the semimetals as metals or nonmetals emerges naturally from PCA and agrees with the current SBQ/IUPAC periodic table. Dataset construction, basic preprocessing, loading and score plots, and interpretation have been emphasized. This activity can be carried out even when students with distinct levels of formation are together in the same learning environment.Keywords: principal components analysis; semimetals; chemical properties of the elements. INTRODUÇÃOA análise de componentes principais (PCA) encontra-se certamente entre as mais importantes ferramentas da análise multivariada, inclusive por constituir a base onde se fundamentam a maioria dos outros métodos multivariados de análise de dados. Como uma ferramenta de análise exploratória a PCA permite revelar a existência ou não de amostras anômalas, de relações entre as variáveis medidas e de relações ou agrupamentos entre amostras. Além disto, métodos eficientes de classificação, como a modelagem independente para analogia de classes (SIMCA) e de calibração, como a regressão em componentes principais (PCR) ou a regressão por mínimos quadrados parciais (PLS), são derivados da PCA.No contexto da aplicação em problemas químicos estes métodos estatísticos são denominados métodos quimiométricos. A importância da quimiometria para os laboratórios modernos de química cresceu com a capacidade dos instrumentos analíticos de produzirem conjuntos de dados cada vez maiores e mais complexos e com a evolução dos computadores que permitem tratá-los agilmente. Assim, aplicações de PCA em problemas de química são cada vez mais comuns e podem ser encontradas facilmente na literatura. 1-10Para o aprendizado desta ferramenta estão disponíveis vários livros 11,12 e artigos, 13-15 tanto para quem pretende apenas usar a PCA como para quem pretende se aprofundar na álgebra e nos algoritmos empregados. Um problema recorrente que não pode ser negligenciado é o risco que os usuários correm de perder o sentido químico de seus estudos, muitas vezes preocupados apenas com as tabelas e os gráficos de excelente qualidade produzidos pelos programas. waters serve a variety of purposes such as public water supply, watering livestock, irrigation of agricultural crops, conservation of flora and fauna, recreation and lounge [15].The urban area of the Poty River in Teresina receives in its bed twenty-three sewers without any pre-treatment. Teresina has more than eight hundred and six thousand inhabitants and only 13% of the population has access to a sewage system. Moreover, this population often has the largest collective network but the parent company of water and sewerage services of Teresina (Agua e Esgoto do Piauí/SA -AGESPISA) did not make the connection to the network of people's homes [15].The economic and social development of cities or countries is based on the availability of water quality and in the ability to conserve and protect watersheds. The quantification of the pollutant load of a water body is the key of to any management that focuses on the conservation and sustainable use of water [16]. This study aimed to analyze the level of pollution in the urban area of the Poty River in Teresina. The results were analyzed using multivariate tools (Principal Component Analysis-PCA) which allowed an assessment of the environmental impact caused by waste disposed in the bed of the river without any pretreatment. IntroductionWaterways pollution has worsened terribly after the construction of domestic sanitary sewage plants that dump its polluted contents into the rivers, sea, etc.[1] The accumulation of city-generated solid waste that is washed away by the rain can also cause pollution in water bodies. The poor quality of urban sanitation and lack of public awareness have brought great damage to storm water quality [2][3][4][5] Metals differ from toxic organic compounds in that they are absolutely non-degradable, so they may accumulate in the environment where their toxicity is manifested. Many studies [2][3][4][5] have been developed in order to quantify metals in river water and these studies have shown that the concentrations of some metals are very high, and therefore can cause serious environmental problems regarding water and sediments [5,[10][11][12][13][14]. The main sources of contamination from these rivers are from various human activities [2][3][4] The Poty river, the subject of this study, has a semi-perennial watercourse that runs 550 km long. It is one of the most predominant of Parnaiba, with its origin in Joaninha Serra, in the state of Ceará. Its basin is 49,800 km², and reaches 27 municipalities, eleven of those being in the state of Ceará and 16 in Piauí. Its This article reports on the level of contamination of effluents, sediments and water in the Poty River, within the city of Teresina. The samples were collected in the months of September 2009, December 2009 and March 2010. Bacanga River Basin faces environmental problems related to urbanization and discharge of untreated domestic sewage, which compromise its ecosystem health. Due to the small number of studies that assessed its water quality, the present study aimed to assess the current status of this ecosystem based on the aquatic life protection index. Samples were carried out every two months, in a total of six events, in six sites along the basin, where the water samples were collected to assess physicochemical parameters and calculate the trophic state index and the index of minimum parameters for the protection of aquatic communities. The data were also compared with values determined by the resolution National Environment Council -CONAMA 357/05. Our results reveal significant changes in the water quality of Bacanga River Basin. An increase in nutrients and chlorophyll-a concentration led it to eutrophication. The surfactant values were high and put in danger the aquatic biota. Dissolved oxygen rates were below the values allowed by the resolution in most sites sampled. The current water quality is terrible for the protection of aquatic life in 61.92% of the sites sampled.Keywords: water quality, contamination, domestic sewage. Índice de proteção da vida aquática em uma bacia urbana do rio Bacanga no norte do Brasil, São Luís -MA ResumoA Bacia Hidrográfica do rio Bacanga (BHRB) apresenta problemas ambientais relacionados a urbanização e lançamentos de esgoto in natura que comprometem a qualidade desse ecossistema. Devido ao reduzido número de estudos associados à avaliação da qualidade da água no local, este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar a situação atual desse ecossistema por meio do Índice de Proteção da Vida Aquática. Seis amostragens bimestrais foram realizadas em seis pontos ao longo da bacia, coletando parâmetros físico-químicos para a aplicação do Índice de Estado Trófico e Índice de Parâmetros Mínimos para a Proteção da Vida Aquática, relacionando-os com a resolução Conselho Nacional do Meio Ambiente -CONAMA/357. Os resultados revelaram alterações significativas na qualidade da água da BHRB, o aumento de nutrientes e das concentrações de clorofila-a conduziram ao um estado geral de eutrofização. Os valores de surfactantes foram altos colocando em risco a biota aquática e as taxas de oxigênio dissolvido estiveram abaixo do permitido pela resolução na maioria dos pontos amostrados. A situação atual da qualidade da água para proteção da vida aquática é péssima em 61,92% dos pontos amostrados.Palavras-chave: qualidade da água, contaminação, efluentes domésticos.
