-Context -The effect of sour taste and food temperature variations in dysphagic patients has not been entirely clarified.Objective -To determine the effect of sour and cold food in the pharyngeal transit times of patients with stroke. Methods -Patients participating in this study were 30 right-handed adults, 16 of which were male and 14 were female, aged 41 to 88 (average age 62.3 years) with ictus varying from 1 to 30 days (median of 6 days). To analyze the pharyngeal transit time a videofluoroscopy swallow test was performed. Each patient was observed during swallow of a 5 mL paste bolus given by spoon, totaling four different stimuli (natural, cold, sour and cold sour), one at a time, room temperature (22°C) and cold (8°C) were used. Later, the tests were analyzed using specific software to measure bolus transit time during the pharyngeal phase. Results -The results showed that the pharyngeal transit time was significantly shorter during swallow of cold sour bolus when compared with other stimuli. Conclusion -Sour taste stimuli associated to cold temperature cause significant change in swallowing patterns, by shortening the pharyngeal transit time, which may lead to positive effects in patients with oropharyngeal dysphagia.

OBJECTIVE: Comparative study of receptiveness (cooperation) and sensitivity of upper gastrointestinal series and intraabdominal esophagus ultrasonography in patients with suspicion of gastroesophageal reflux. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The present study included 42 pediatric patients (26 male, with mean age of 33.64 ± 34.33 months, and 16 female, with mean age of 31.02 ± 35.56 months) with suspicion of gastroesophageal reflux, who were initially submitted to upper gastrointestinal series and subsequently to intraabdominal esophagus ultrasonography. RESULTS: The statistical comparative analysis covering sexes and ages suggests no evidence of association with cooperation, both for the upper gastrointestinal series and the intraabdominal esophagus ultrasonography. However, in the classification of the patients' cooperation, the technique of upper gastrointestinal series presented less than 50% of cooperation, while 80.49% of patients cooperated in the intraabdominal esophagus ultrasonography examinations. As regards the methods sensitivity for the diagnosis of gastroesophageal reflux, the technique of intraabdominal esophagus ultrasonography was significantly superior (85.7%) to the upper gastrointestinal series (47.6%). CONCLUSION: The present study suggests that an intraabdominal esophagus ultrasonography should be performed even if gastroesophageal reflux even if it is not detected at the upper gastrointestinal series. MATERIAIS E MÉTODOS: Foram incluídos no estudo 42 pacientes pediátricos (26 masculinos, com idade média de 33,64 ± 34,33 meses, e 16 femininos, com idade média de 31,02 ± 35,56 meses) com suspeita de refluxo gastroesofágico, os quais foram submetidos, inicialmente, a seriografia do esôfago, estômago e duodeno, e posteriormente, a ultrassonografia do esôfago intra-abdominal. RESUL-TADOS: A análise estatística comparativa entre os sexos e as idades sugere não haver evidência de associação com a colaboração, tanto para a seriografia do esôfago, estômago e duodeno como para a ultrassonografia do esôfago intra-abdominal. Entretanto, na classificação quanto ao tipo de colaboração, a técnica de seriografia do esôfago, estômago e duodeno apresentou menos de 50% de colaboração, enquanto 80,49% dos pacientes colaboraram com a ultrassonografia do esôfago intra-abdominal. Quanto à sensibilidade do diagnóstico de refluxo gastroesofágico, a técnica de ultrassonografia do esôfago intra-abdominal (85,7%) foi significativamente superior à de seriografia do esôfago, estômago e duodeno (47,6%). RESUMO Objetivo Este estudo tem por objetivo descrever a análise qualitativa e quantitativa temporal da deglutição orofaríngea em crianças com diagnóstico de Síndrome de Down (SD). Método Estudo de série de seis casos, com idade variando de quatro a 17 meses (Média de 11,16 meses e mediana de 12 meses). Realizada análise qualitativa e quantitativa temporal da deglutição orofaríngea por meio de videofluoroscopia de deglutição e software específico. Foram analisados os parâmetros qualitativos de coordenação oral, resíduos orais, escape oral posterior, penetração, aspiração laringotraqueal e realizada análise do tempo de trânsito oral total (TTOT) e faríngeo. Resultados Verificou-se alteração em pelo menos quatro dos parâmetros qualitativos investigados. Somente um dos indivíduos apresentou diferença no TTOT quando comparado com os demais e não houve diferença no tempo de trânsito faríngeo entre os casos. Conclusão Houve alterações qualitativas na deglutição em crianças com SD e diferença no TTOT somente no caso de menor faixa etária.
