The Clinical Images Database (BIC) is an archive of clinical images for medical care and research. Objective: To describe the characteristics of and requirements for the creation of a BIC in a tertiary center in Northeastern Brazil. Methods: Technological advances allow for long-term storage of clinical images and retrieval according to clinical needs. With the patient consent and image anonymousness, the database can be used for research. It allows measurements/comparisons, reconstruction/ deconstruction and analysis of anatomical, clinical and pathological variables. The specific infrastructure and image capture and storage requirements for a BIC used for clinical and research purposes are analyzed. Results: Image capture and storage: Comprises centralization of X-ray, CT, MRI and angiography data through the network to a server. An anonymous version of each set of studies must be available for use in research. External backup is needed. Visualization: Comprises the user interface and includes stations for viewing and data processing. Maintenance: A technical team assists users and manages the system, troubleshooting problems, registering users and performing regular audits. An external committee supervised the creation of the BIC, and continues to review its progress. Conclusions: The present study could serve as a basis for the creation of similar clinical databases for research use

OBJETIVO: Neste artigo são descritas a implementação e avaliação de um sistema de gerenciamento de imagens médicas com suporte à recuperação baseada em conteúdo (PACS-CBIR), integrando módulos voltados para a aquisição, armazenamento e distribuição de imagens, e a recuperação de informação textual por palavras-chave e de imagens por similaridade. MATERIAIS E MÉTODOS: O sistema foi implementado com tecnologias para Internet, utilizando-se programas livres, plataforma Linux e linguagem de programação C++, PHP e Java. Há um módulo de gerenciamento de imagens compatível com o padrão DICOM e outros dois módulos de busca, um baseado em informações textuais e outro na similaridade de atributos de textura de imagens. RESULTADOS: Os resultados obtidos indicaram que as imagens são gerenciadas e armazenadas corretamente e que o tempo de retorno das imagens, sempre menor do que 15 segundos, foi considerado bom pelos usuários. As avaliações da recuperação por similaridade demonstraram que o extrator escolhido possibilitou a separação das imagens por região anatômica. CONCLUSÃO: Com os resultados obtidos pode-se concluir que é viável a implementação de um PACS-CBIR. O sistema apresentou-se compatível com as funcionalidades do DICOM e integrável ao sistema de informação local. A funcionalidade de recuperação de imagens similares pode ser melhorada com a inclusão de outros descritores.

Introduction: The use of tridimensional (3D) printing in healthcare has contributed to the development of instruments and implants. The 3D printing has also been used for teaching future professionals. In order to have a good 3D printed piece, it is necessary to have high quality images, such as the ones from Computerized Tomography (CT scan) exam, which shows the anatomy from different cuts and allows for a good image reconstruction.Purpose: To propose a protocol for creating digital files from computerized tomography images to be printed in 3D and used as didactic material in the ophthalmology field, using open-source software, InVesalius®, Blender® and Repetier-Host©.Methods: Two orbit CT scan exam images in the DICOM format were used to create the virtual file to be printed in 3D. To edit the images, the software InVesalius® (Version 3.1.1) was used to delimit and clean the structure of interest, and also to convert to STL format. The software Blender® (Version 2.80) was used to refine the image. The STL image was then sent to the Repetier-Host© (Version 2.1.3) software, which splits the image in layers and generates the instructions to print the piece in the 3D printer using the polymer polylactic acid (PLA). Results:The printed anatomical pieces printed reproduced most structures, both bone and soft structures, satisfactorily. However, there were some problems during printing, such as the loss of small bone structures, that are naturally surrounded by muscles due to the lack of support. Conclusion:Despite the difficulties faced during the production of the pieces, it was also possible to reproduce the anatomical structures adequately, which indicates that this protocol of 3D printing from medical images is viable.
