The dairy Nutrients Requirements of Cattle (NRC) was developed using data from purebred Holsteins and it might not accurately predict the performance of crossbred cattle. Our objectives were to evaluate the effects of two feeding levels (FLs) and three breed compositions (BCs) on nutrient intake, digestibility, performance, and methane (CH4) emissions of prepubertal dairy heifers. We used thirty-six heifers from three BCs: purebred Holstein (H), purebred Gyr (G), and F1 Holstein × Gyr (HG). Each BC had 12 animals and the experiment was designed as twelve incomplete three by three Latin squares, in a factorial arrangement three by two, with three BCs and two FLs (400 and 800 g/day). Total tract nutrient digestibility was determined using total fecal collection and DMI was individually measured. The data were analyzed using the PROC MIXED in SAS. Dry matter intake of all nutrients increased from the medium to high feeding level and the nutrients digestibility coefficients did differ among BCs. Achieved body weight gain in the medium FL treatment was greater than those predicted using the NRC, suggesting that crossbred and Gyr heifers have similar performance to Holsteins. Breed composition does not influence body weight gain of confined dairy heifers, but Holstein heifers fed a medium FL had higher feed efficiency and reduced CH4 emissions intensity.

A produção de leite brasileira é caracterizada pela exploração de pastagens tropicais, com a utilização de animais zebuínos, puros ou cruzados o com raças europeias leiteiras. A composição do leite é fator importante na eficiência econômica de toda a cadeia de produção. O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar a produção e composição de leite de vacas de diferentes tipos raciais em pastagens tropicais. O experimento foi realizado na Fazenda Estância Orestes Prata Tibério Junior da (ABCZ), sendo utilizado a área experimental de 20 ha formada por 13 piquetes em sistema de pastejo rotativo, com pastagem de Brachiaria Brizantha cv Paiaguas. Os animais foram manejados com 1 dia de ocupação em cada piquete, com oferta de 10% do peso vivo animal em forragem (MS). O período experimental foi de 18 dias, sendo 13 dias de adaptação e 5 dias de avaliações. O suplemento proteico-energético (28% de PB) foi fornecido individualmente na razão de 1 kg de para cada 3 kg de leite produzido, sendo parcelado duas vezes ao dia, sempre após a ordenha. Foram avaliadas 14 vacas leiteiras, sendo oito da raça Gir, duas da raça Sindi e três animais Guzolando. A ordenha foi realizada duas vezes por dia, às 5:00 e às 16:00 horas. A pesagem do leite foi feita diariamente. As análises de gordura e de sólidos não gordurosos (SNG), contemplando proteína, carboidratos, minerais e vitaminas, foram realizadas pelo processo de infravermelho com analisador Bentley 2000 (Bentley Instruments ®). Foi utilizado o delineamento inteiramente casualizado, tendo 3 tratamentos (raças Gir, Sindi e Guzolando) e cada animal correspondeu a uma unidade experimental. A comparação de médias foi realizada pelo teste Tukey com nível de significância de 5%. A produção de leite foi superior (P = 0,0007) para a raça Guzolanda (20,02 kg.dia-1), sendo semelhantes entre as raças Sindi (8,15 kg.dia-1) e Gir (9,60 kg.dia-1). Em relação a composição do leite, tanto a produção de gordura quanto a produção de sólidos não gordurosos, houve efeito de raça (P = 0,0017 e P = 0,0006, respectivamente). A raça Guzolanda foi superior em ambas características de composição do leite, apresentando produção de gordura de 0,72 kg.dia-1 e de SNG de 1,78 kg.dia-1. As raças zebuínas puras, Gir e Sindi não diferiram em relação a produção de gordura (0,32 e 0,26 kg.dia-1, respectivamente) e SNG (0,87 e 0,77 kg.dia-1). Dessa forma, foi possível concluir que o cruzamento promoveu ganhos na produção e na composição do leite em sistemas de pastagens tropicais.

IntroductionThe variation in bacterial communities among breeds has been previously reported and may be one of the reasons why Holstein × Gyr dairy heifers have better development in grazing systems in tropical conditions. This study aimed to explore the ruminal microbiota composition, the IL-1β gene variation, tick incidence, and blood parameters of Holstein × Gyr (½ Holstein × ½ Gyr) and Holstein heifers grazing intensely managed Guinea grass (Panicum maximum Jacq. cv. Mombaça).MethodsSixteen heifers were divided into two groups consisting of 8 Holstein × Gyr and 8 Holstein heifers. The experimental period was comprised of 3 periods of 21 days. Ruminal samples were taken via the stomach tube technique. The sequencing of the V4 hypervariable region of the 16S rRNA gene was performed using the Illumina MiSeq platform. Counting and collection of ticks were conducted each 21 days. Blood and skeletal muscle tissue biopsies were performed at the end of the experiment.ResultsFirmicutes were the most abundant phyla present in both breed rumen samples and Bacteroidota showed differences in relative abundance between breed groups, with greater values for Holstein heifers (p < 0.05 with FDR correction). The 10 most abundant unique OTUs identified in each breed included several OTUs of the genus Prevotella. Holstein heifers had a greater tick count and weight (9.8 ticks/animal and 1.6 g/animal, respectively) than Holstein × Gyr (2.56 ticks/animal and 0.4 g/animal, respectively). We found nucleotide substitutions in the IL-1β gene that might be related to adaptation and resistance phenotypes to tick infestation in Holstein × Gyr heifers. Blood concentrations of urea, albumin, insulin-like growth factor 1, triiodothyronine, and thyroxine were greater in Holstein × Gyr than in Holstein heifers.ConclusionAdaptations in Holstein × Gyr heifers such as ruminal microbiota, tick resistance, nucleotide substitutions in IL-1β gene, and hormone concentration suggest a better energy metabolism and thermoregulation resulting in better performance in tropical grazing systems.
