Biological aspects of Harmonia axyridis in comparison with Cycloneda sanguinea and Hippodamia convergens

Abstract: -The objective of this work was to evaluate the development, survival, reproductive capacity, and longevity of the Asian ladybug Harmonia axyridis in comparison with Cycloneda sanguinea and Hippodamia convergens. Coccinellid larvae and adults were fed daily with Schizaphis graminum. Ten couples of each species were isolated for evaluation of the adult phase. The duration of the larval stage of H. axyridis is the longest (10.2 days) and its adults are the heaviest (29.7 mg) compared with C. sanguinea and H. con… Show more

“…Evans (2000) revealed that predators prefer to lay eggs in regions with a high abundance of prey items to ensure an adequate food supply for their progeny. Additionally, some vulnerable juveniles complete their development quickly to minimize the risk of self-predation (Santos et al, 2013). The data presented herein confirm that biological parameters (e.g., developmental duration, adult longevity, and reproduction) of C. septempunctata are considerably manipulated by the type of prey species.…”

“…Assuming a water content to wet mass ratio of 0.7 (Sabo et al., ), dry mass was then converted to wet mass by dividing by 0.3. When mass was available for adults but not instars, we calculated instar mass by multiplying adult mass by the average per cent of adult mass for the second, third or fourth instars of Cycloneda sanguinea , Harmonia axyridis and Hippodamia convergens as given in Dos Santos, dos Santos‐Cividanes, Cividanes, and de Matos ().…”
