Show more

“…Chemical sterilization with sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), proposed initially by Teixeira et al (2005a, b), provided satisfactory results for pineapple (Ananas comosus L. cv Smooth Cayenne) (Texeira et al, 2006), sequoia (Sequoia sempervirens L.) (Ribeiro et al, 2011), and eucalyptus (Eucalyptus pellita L. and Eucalyptus benthamii Maiden et Cambage) (Teixeira et al, 2008;Brondani et al, 2013). Recently another chemical compound, chlorine dioxide (ClO 2 ), a stabilized gas, used by Cardoso (2009) in the sterilization of culture media for anthurium (Anthurium andraeanum Lind.) and gerbera, eliminated contamination without causing phytotoxicity to plants (Cardoso, 2009;Cardoso and Silva, 2012).…”

“…Currently, ultraviolet light and chlorine-based products, such as the stabilized liquid chlorine dioxide (ClO 2 ), are very efficient, the latter even when used at very low concentrations (Cardoso, 2009;Cardoso & Teixeira da Silva, 2012). ClO 2 is also considered an excellent disinfectant, with bactericidal and fungicide action.…”

“…Large energy consumption is also a drawback because the heating sterilization usually requires heating the entire sample volume. Thus, some nonheating sterilization methods, such as UV irradiation [2], ion beam irradiation [3], electrical [4] and chemical [5] methods, have been proposed to avoid these problems. Among them, irradiation methods require expensive instruments, and are not to be easily popularized.…”
