The growth productivity of broilers is influenced by improving growth performance through improving body weight, average daily gain, and feed conversion rate. The objective of the study was to determine the effect of quantitative feed restriction duration on growth performance and carcass characteristics of broilers. A total of 144 day-old broiler chicks were reared in a deep litter system until slaughter at 42 days. Chicks were randomly allocated to three treatments which were replicated three times with 16 birds per replicate. The three treatments were the control (T1), one week of feed restriction (T2), and two weeks of feed restriction (T3). Birds were fed with starter, grower and finisher diets. The average daily gain (ADG), average daily feed intake (ADFI), and the feed conversion ratio (FCR) were computed for each week. Carcass weight and internal organs weights were measured. The body weight gained by the birds in T1 was similar to the birds that were restricted for a week. The treatments had a significant effect on the average daily gain in weeks 4, 5, and 6. The ADG for T2 was higher (P < 0.05) at week 5 after 1 week of restriction, than T1 and T3. The feed conversion ratio was significantly higher in T3 after 2 weeks of restriction. In T2 and T3, feed intake was significantly lower than in birds fed ad libitum at week 4 at the start of the treatment. There was no significant effect on the relative weights of heart weights, liver, gizzard, feet, and heads among the treatment groups except for intestine weight which was lower (P < 0.05) in T1 than T2 and T3. It was concluded that broilers that were restricted for one week had a positive result in growth performance. Feed restriction had minimal effect on the organ weights of broiler chickens.

RESUMO -Foram utilizados 60 suínos machos castrados (89,1 ± 4,2 kg) para avaliar o uso de níveis (0, 5, 10, 15 e 20%) de restrição qualitativa, resultando em valores de 3. 407, 3.240, 3.060, 2.890 e 2.720 kcal de energia digestível por quilo de ração. Dez animais foram abatidos no início do experimento para determinação da composição corporal inicial, enquanto os demais foram alimentados com as dietas experimentais até atingirem 128 kg. Utilizou-se o delineamento em blocos casualizados para controle das diferenças de peso inicial, com dez blocos, cinco tratamentos (dietas experimentais) e um animal por unidade experimental. Dados de características de desempenho, de carcaça e parâmetros séricos dos animais foram submetidos à análise de variância com posterior desdobramento em regressão em função dos níveis de restrição qualitativa das dietas. O aumento nos níveis de restrição qualitativa não alterou o consumo diário de ração, mas reduziu linearmente o consumo diário de energia digestível e o ganho diário de peso, piorando a conversão alimentar e melhorando a eficiência de utilização de energia pelos animais. Os níveis de restrição qualitativa provocaram redução linear dos níveis séricos de triacilgliceróis e da espessura de toucinho e aumento da porcentagem e quantidade de carne magra e do índice de bonificação das carcaças, mas não alteraram o ganho diário de carne magra. Performance and carcass characteristics and serum parameters of pigs were submitted to analysis of variance and with posterior analysis of regression in function of qualitative restriction levels of diets. The increase of feed qualitative restriction levels did not affect the daily feed intake but linearly reduced the daily digestible energy intake and the daily weight gain, resulting in worse feed conversion and better efficiency of energy utilization by pigs. The objective of this study is to evaluate the influence of five feed restriction programs (FRP) on broiler performance and carcass yield. 425 Cobb 500® broilers were distributed in a completely randomized design with five FRPs and five replicates with 17 broilers. The FRPs were: Program 1 (P1): consumption ad libitum (AL) of control diet from 14 to 42 days; P2: quantitative restriction (QTR) of 10% of AL consumption from 14 to 28 days and AL consumption from 29 to 42 days; P3: AL consumption from 14 to 28 days and QTR from 29 to 42 days; P4: qualitative restriction (QLR) of 10% of the level of crude protein and essential amino acids from 14 to 28 days and AL consumption from 29 to 42 days; and P5: AL consumption from 14 to 28 days and QLR from 29 to 42 days. The broilers of the AL treatment gained more weight (p≤0.01), but had a similar FCR (P>0.05) compared to broilers submitted to QTR from 29 to 42 days. In addition, broilers fed QTR from 14 to 28 days presented a lower FI and a better FCR (p≤0.01) in relation to broilers fed QLR of 14 to 28 (P4) and 29 to 42 days (P5). The broilers fed QTR of 14 to 28 days diet presented a similar FCR as broilers fed AL. The 10% reduction in AL consumption of 14 to 28 d is a viable economical alternative to feed broilers up to 42 days of age.
