Carrot is one of the most consumed vegetables in Brazil, where the cultivars currently grown present a high yield potential and nutritional demand, which require constant adjustments in fertilization programs for the crop. This study aimed at determining reference values and diagnostic indices by using the DRIS method in three phenological stages of the carrot crop (around 40 and 70 days after sowing and at harvest), as well as evaluating the possibility of early diagnosis for nutritional limitations. For determining the DRIS norms, a database was obtained from leaf samplings, root yields and leaf contents of N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S, B, Cu, Mn and Zn, in carrot commercial fields. The nutritional limitation order was generated as a function of the fertilization response and optimum range of leaf contents. The reference values for K, Ca, Mg, S and Mn were similar in all sampling times. N, P, B, Cu and Zn varied with the stages sampled, indicating the need to standardize the sampling times for these nutrients. Mn, K and Mg were the most limiting nutrients for the crop growth, while Zn and B were the least limiting. There was a correlation between the diagnoses performed at early stages and those performed at harvest for K, Ca, Mg, S and Mn, indicating the possibility of early diagnosis for the deficiency of these nutrients.

SUMMARYFarm planning requires an assessment of the soil class. Research suggest that the Diagnosis and Recommendation Integrated System (DRIS) has the capacity to evaluate the nutritional status of coffee plantations, regardless of environmental conditions. Additionally, the use of DRIS could reduce the costs for farm planning. This study evaluated the relationship between the soil class and nutritional status of coffee plants (Coffea canephora Pierre) using the Critical Level (CL) and DRIS methods, based on two multivariate statistical methods (discriminant and multidimensional scaling analyses). During three consecutive years, yield and foliar concentration of nutrients (N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S, B, Zn, Mn, Fe and Cu) were obtained from coffee plantations cultivated in Espírito Santo state. Discriminant analysis showed that the soil class was an important factor determining the nutritional status of the coffee plants. The grouping separation by the CL method was not as effective as the DRIS one. The bidimensional analysis of Euclidean distances did not show the same relationship between plant nutritional status and soil class. Multidimensional scaling analysis by the CL method indicated that 93.3 % of the crops grouped into one cluster, whereas the DRIS method split the fields more evenly into three clusters. The DRIS method thus proved to be more consistent than the CL method for grouping coffee plantations by soil class.Index terms: DRIS, critical level, plant nutrition, nutritional diagnosis, soil classification, oxisol, Coffea canephora. The evaluation of the nutritional status in eucalypt (Eucalyptus grandis W. Hill ex Maid.) forests through vegetal tissue analyses what reflects water and nutrient flows in the system, and represents a complementary tool to soil analysis can be helpful to raise and maintain the forest productivity at high levels. This study compared the use of the Diagnosis and Recommendation Integrated System (DRIS), Modified-DRIS (M-DRIS), and Compositional Nutrient Diagnosis (CND) diagnose methods in eucalypt stands in Central-Eastern Minas Gerais State, Brazil. Data of productivity and of N, P, K, Ca, and Mg leaf contents in 993 Eucalyptus grandis stands aging between 72 and 153 months, planted on six sites in 3 × 2 m spacing, were used. The nutritional status was diagnosed by the DRIS, M-DRIS, and CND methods, and validated by the chi-square (χ 2 ) test applied to the nutrients diagnosed as primary limiting by deficiency. These three methods were compared to each other based on the diagnosis concordance frequency (DCF) derived from the fertilization response potential (FRP) by the criteria considering each nutrient separately; from all (5) to none (0); and only the primary limiting nutrients by either deficiency or excess. The diagnosis concordance level among the methods was procedure-dependent, and varied according to the nutrient concentration in trees. O presente trabalho foi realizado aplicando-se o Sistema Integrado de Diagnose e Recomendação (DRIS), DRIS modificado (M-DRIS) e Diagnose da Composição Nutricional (CND), com o objetivo de comparar as diagnoses realizadas entre os métodos DRIS, M-DRIS e CND para o eucalipto, em localidades da região Centro-Leste de Minas Gerais. Foram utilizados dados de produtividade e dos teores de N, P, K, Ca e Mg nas folhas, referentes a 993 talhões de Eucalyptus grandis com idades variando de 72 a 153 meses, plantados no espaçamento 3 × 2 m em seis localidades dessa região. A diagnose do estado nutricional foi realizada utilizando-se o DRIS, M-DRIS e CND e validada pelo teste do qui-quadrado (χ 2 ), aplicado àqueles nutrientes diagnosticados como limitantes primários por deficiência.
