Insects of the orders Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, and Trichoptera (EPT) are often used to assess the conditions of aquatic environments, but few studies have examined the differences in these communities between riffles and pools. Our objective was to test whether riffles shelter greater richness and abundance of EPT, as well as to assess the sensitivity of these insects for detecting impacts from different land uses in streams in southeastern Brazil. Samples were collected in the dry season of 2012 with a Surber sampler in riffles and pools of nine streams (forest, pasture, and urban areas). Principal component analysis distinguished the streams according to different land uses as a function of percentage of plant cover and water oxygenation level and showed partial distinction between riffles and pools as a function of current speed and percentage of ultrafine sand. Detrended correspondence analysis indicated the distinction in EPT composition between riffles and pools, except in urban streams. The results of this study confirm the expected differences in the EPT fauna structure between riffles and pools, especially in forest and pasture environments. The individual metrics of riffle and pool assemblages showed significantly different responses to land use. Therefore, we suggest individual sampling of riffles and pools, since the metrics of these assemblages’ insects can differ between these habitats and influence the results of assessments in low-order streams.

The systematics of the Neotropical caddisfly genus Grumichella Müller (Leptoceridae: Grumichellinae) are reviewed. Diagnoses, descriptions and illustrations are provided for four previously described species, G. aequiunguis Flint, 1983, G. flaveola (Ulmer, 1911), G. pulchella (Banks, 1910) and G. rostrata Thienemann, 1905, and nine new species: G. blahniki sp. nov. (Peru), G. boraceia sp. nov. (Brazil), G. cressae sp. nov. (Venezuela), G. jureia sp. nov. (Brazil), G. leccii sp. nov. (Brazil), G. muelleri sp. nov. (Brazil), G. paprockii sp. nov. (Brazil), G. parati sp. nov. (Brazil) and G. trujilloi sp. nov. (Venezuela). The monophyly of the genus is corroborated (16 synapomorphies) and the phylogenetic relationships of its included species, based on analysis of 66 adult, larval, and pupal characters, are inferred as (G. aequiunguis ((G. boraceiae (G. leccii, G. parati)) (G. rostrata ((G. flaveola, G. pulchella) (G. muelleri, G. paprockii)) (G. jureia (G. trujilloi (G. cressae, G. blahniki)))))). En este estudio se evaluó la respuesta de la composición, la estructura y la función de la comunidad de macroinvertebrados a la variación temporal hidráulica en el río Agua Blanca. Se recolectaron 60 muestras en dos tramos durante dos épocas hidroclimáticas mediante un muestreo aleatorio estratificado. Se midió el caudal y el ancho del canal, así como la velocidad, la profundidad y elnúmero de Froude (Fr) en cada muestra biológica. En la prueba de Kolmogorov-Smirnov se evidenció un incremento significativo en los valores de la velocidad, el caudal y el Fr durante la época de lluvias. El análisis ANOSIM evidenció una variación temporal en la composición y la estructura de la comunidad. Los géneros Leptohyphes, Smicridea, Helicopsyche, Nanomis y Marilia fueron más abundantes en la época de transición, y las familias Simuliidae y Sericostomatidae en la época de lluvias. El grupo funcional alimentario (GFA) dominante en la época de transición fue el de colectores-recolectores (CR) y en la de lluvias, el de los fragmentadores (FR) y colectores-filtradores (CF). Según el análisis de correspondencia canónica (ACC), Simuliidae y Metrichia se asociaron con valores altos de la profundidad, Mayobaetis con el ancho del cauce y Sericostomatidae con la velocidad y el Fr. Los ostrácodos, Meridialis y Triplectides presentaron una asociación negativa con la velocidad. Según las curvas de preferencia, el rango óptimo de velocidad para la familia Sericostomatidae fluctuó entre 1,8 m.s-1 y 2,3 m.s-1, en tanto que las profundidades óptimas para la familia Simuliidae estuvieron entre 0,3 m y 0,55 m. Se resalta el papel de las variables hidráulicas evaluadas como determinantes de la presencia de algunos géneros y grupos funcionales.
