Background: Identify the knowledge and information needs of Internet-using patients undergoing orthognathic surgery by blogs and virtual communities.Methods: Exploratory descriptive study that obtained the data from virtual communities and blogs of Portuguese language not administrated by surgeons or treatment clinics. Thematic content analysis was used to identify the comments of interest and it was identified 257 posts that fit the study's objective. Results:The data were separated in two groups: pre and post-operatory period. The most common topics were related to recovery, paresthesia, costs, edema, fear, and outcome. Other problems, such as pain, eating, anesthesia, regret, mouth opening, kissing, doubt, laser therapy, voice changes, procedures, counsel, difficulty breathing, acne, orthodontics, relief, faith, physical therapy, medical licensure, hair loss, and acupuncture, were also discussed. Conclusions:Based on this analysis, we concluded that principal information needs of internet-using patients are related to the recovery of the masticatory functions and reducing the edema and paresthesia. A good professional-patient bond can help patients to clarify their doubts and avoid the use of Internet to solve their postoperative difficulties.

Objective: The aim of this qualitative study was to analyze the content of posts on Twitter in order to gain an in-depth understanding of patients’ thoughts and experiences surrounding orthognathic surgical treatment. Materials and Methods: Using the Twitter search function, with the keywords “jaw surgery,” the 1,000 most recent posts on Twitter with relevance to a combined orthodontic and orthognathic surgical treatment were extracted. After applying relevant inclusion and exclusion criteria, the selected posts were analyzed using thematic analysis by 2 independent investigators. Distinct themes and subthemes were developed. Results: A total of 689 posts were analyzed; the 3 main themes identified in relation to orthognathic surgery were preoperative engagement, postoperative difficulties, and posttreatment satisfaction. Twelve subthemes were also identified, expressing issues such as anticipation or apprehension of the surgical procedure, postoperative pain and edema, dietary restrictions and weight loss, paresthesia, depression, and satisfaction with improvements in appearance and self-confidence. The 6 terms most frequently used in tweets were “recovery,” “braces,” “swollen,” “eat,” “liquid diet,” and “pain.” Conclusions: The findings from the present study can increase the awareness of clinicians involved in the combined orthodontic and orthognathic surgical treatment of patients with dentofacial deformities, allowing them to better educate and counsel their patients throughout the entire treatment process.

Objective: This study was to assess the feasibility of educational intervention nusing printed materials and the appropriateness of the instruments chosen to assess the efficacy of the intervention in patients undergoing orthognathic surgery. Methods: Nonrandomized pilot study was conducted with eight patients. In the preoperative period, an educational intervention using printed material and the application of instruments for data collection was carried out; in the postoperative period, only data collection was carried out. Friedman, Wilcoxon, McNemar and Rasch's statistical tests were applied in order to assess the variables and the instrument. Results: Significant findings with respect to trait anxiety (p = .016), lower difficulty of patients to perform oral hygiene (p = .008), mild pain (p = .025), and moderate pain (p = .046). For the knowledge test, Rasch analysis showed that the model did not fit, since easy questions were stacked in the lower limit of the map, which showed the need to reformulate some questions. Conclusions: The intervention was consistent, but it can only be confirmed as effective through a research with a control group. It was observed that the use of brochures could improve the management of the signs and symptoms experienced by the patients in the postoperative period.
