Colonização pelo Staphylococcus aureus em profissionais de enfermagem de um hospital escola de Pernambuco

Abstract: This study was performed with the objective to identify the prevalence of colonization by Staphylococcus aureus in nursing professionals from a teaching hospital in Pernambuco, and evaluate the resistance profile of these isolates. To do this, we performed a cross-sectional study where biological samples were collected from the hands and nasal cavities of the subjects. S. aureus was identified using agar (blood agar and mannitol salt) via catalase and coagulase tests. The sensitivity profile was determined by … Show more

“…22 It is worth mentioning that Staphylococcus aureus isolated from saliva and nasal secretion samples presented resistance to 8 of the 11 antimicrobials evaluated. Other studies 3,9,23 showed a high penicillin and erythromycin resistance rate, corroborating the results in this study regarding antibiotics.…”

“…[2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9] Asymptomatic carriers of Staphylococcus aureus may act as disseminators of the microorganism to a population susceptible to colonization. 10 Approximately 20% of the population may be considered persistent carriers, 60% transitory carriers, and the remaining 20% do not present colonization by Staphylococcus aureus.…”

“…The S. aureus transmission occurs by direct (especially hands) or indirect contact (contaminated surfaces or fomites), especially the colonization in which the individual becomes the carrier of the microorganism, without necessarily showing characteristic signs and symptoms of infection (asymptomatic carrier) (3)(4)(5) .…”

“…Many studies have reported the presence of MRSA strains in the nasal mucosa, even at low levels, (2,(4)(5)(6)10,20) associated with greater morbidity and mortality. In the present study, the prevalence of MRSA was almost 10%, a value similar to that obtained in other studies involving hospitalized patients or health professionals.…”

“…Therefore, studies in this region are necessary to support implementation and monitoring of measures of control to both minimize the potential spread of this microorganism and subsequently reduce the risk of hospital infections. (10) Thus, the aim of this study was to describe nasal colonization by Staphylococcus sp., especially S. aureus, their respective sensitivity to methicillin, and associated factors in patients in a referral hospital in the interior of northeast Brazil.…”
