Abstract:The aim of this report was to verify in-patients and their relative's opinion and knowledge of the use of electroconvulsive therapy. By means of a quantitative analysis, the use of this treatment was shown to be accepted despite the individuals knew little about it. It was observed that the knowledge of this treatment had influence over individual's opinion about it. Thus nurses play an important role on the instruction of these individuals regarding this treatment.
The authors consider that every national system of care should have a clear policy and clear regulations about ECT. The provisions set up by the Italian Minister of Health seem to be consistent with Italian health policies and psychiatric community care.

Overall, the weight of the evidence supports the notion that patients undergoing ECT are well-disposed towards it. However, much needs to be done to improve the practice of ECT and to enhance patients' satisfaction with the experience of treatment.
