Experimental infection of dogs with a Brazilian strain of Rickettsia rickettsii: clinical and laboratory findings

Abstract: The bacterium Rickettsia rickettsii is the etiological agent of an acute, severe disease called Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF) in the United States or Brazilian spotted fever (BSF) in Brazil. In addition to these two countries, the disease has also been reported to affect humans in Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia and Argentina (Paddock et al. 2008). Common clinical signs and symptoms are fever, nausea, vomiting, rash, myalgia, anorexia and headache. The case-fatality rate is 5-10% in the United State… Show more

“…In a recent study of experimental infection, dogs exposed to a Brazil isolate of R. rickettsii had fever, lethargy, anorexia, anemia, and thrombocytopenia; 1 also had ocular lesions (12). These clinical signs have been reported in the United States for dogs with active R. rickettsii infection (4,5) and were also noted in the present study under natural conditions, except for anemia and ocular lesions.…”

“…Samples that reacted at the screening dilution (1:64) were then titrated using serial two-fold dilutions to determine endpoint titers. Serum showing a Rickettsia species titer at least four times higher than those observed for the other Rickettsia species was considered to be homologous to the first Rickettsia species or to a very closely related genotype (LABRUNA et al, 2007;PIRANDA et al, 2008).…”

“…Tickborne rickettsial infection in dogs can range from inapparent to severe. RMSF in dogs manifests with fever, lethargy, decreased appetite, tremors, scleral injection, maculopapular rash on ears and exposed skin, and petechial lesions on mucous membranes (91)(92)(93). A veterinarian should be consulted when tickborne rickettsial disease is suspected in dogs or other animals (see Protecting Pets from Tick Bites).…”
