“…We show that APA 7 alone is sufficient and does not require backup by APA 8 or other characters. In the reduviid Triatoma pallidipennis , the 9th sternite of nymphs was shown to be divided in females but not males (Rodríguez‐Sánchez, Alejandre‐Aguilar, Nogueda‐Torres, Camacho, & Martín‐Frías, 2003) and we confirm this observation in C. lectularius .…”

“…Morphological and morphometric analyses conducted with other structures, such as the scutellum, genital plates in nymphs, and egg ornamentation, have shown no polymorphism in several Meccus species. At the same time, these studies have provided discriminant characters to differentiate among species (Rodríguez‐Sánchez et al , Takashi et al , Rivas et al , ).…”

“…The sex of the specimens was later confirmed at the adult stage. The treatment used for the analysis of the genital plates was described by Rodriguez‐Sanchez et al (2003). Photographs of the genital plates were taken with a stereoscopic microscope.…”

“…The study of the development of genital plates in nymphs has been useful for sex differentiation and has taxonomic value (Lent and Wygodzinsky 1979, Rodríguez‐Sánchez et al 2003, Rosa et al 2010). The first studies were conducted by Galliard (1935), later, the contributions of Corrêa (1954), Corrêa et al (1964), Espínola (1966), Ramírez‐Pérez (1969), Salgado et al (1979) and others have been important in the study of this structure in species of Triatominae as T. infestans , T. brasiliensis , T. dimidiata , Rhodnius prolixus and others species of epidemiological importance.…”
