“…Previous investigations on the interactions between the host nutritional status and infection by S. mansoni have called attention to the role of undernutrition on the biology and differentiation of the parasites, inducing phenotypic changes in adult worms of both genders (Ferreira & Coutinho 1999, Neves et al 2002, Oliveira et al 2003), most likely owing to the lack of essential nutrients for their adequate growth and development. Nutritional deficiency also influences the immune response and immunopathology of schistosomiasis in the murine experimental host (Coutinho 2004, Oliveira et al 2004, Coutinho et al 2007, 2010).…”

“…Undernourished and well-nourished mice have similar numbers and sex ratios of worms (unpublished results). However, worms recovered from undernourished infected mice show morphological changes in their internal and external structures and exhibit a low fecundity when compared to parasites recovered from well-nourished hosts (Neves et al 2001;Oliveira et al 2003). In low-protein fed mice, the low fecundity detected in these parasites probably affects the production of eggs and of periovular granulomas, as well as the progression to liver periportal fibrosis (Coutinho et al 1997b).…”

“…Vice versa, malnutrition can influence the development of the parasite in its host. In experimental S. mansoni infections, the development of male and female schistosomes has been shown to be impaired in undernourished mice (Oliveira et al 2003;Barros et al 2009), and the scarcity of host micronutrients also affected nematode development and reduced parasitic burden in experimental models such as hamsters (Held et al 2006) or mice (Bourgeois et al 2007).…”
