Abstract. Glochidia are the larval stage of freshwater unionid mussels that parasitize the fins and gill apparatus of fish. A total of 22 fish species were examined for the presence of glochidia whose distribution on individual hosts was studied on three common fish species, the roach Rutilus rutilus (L.), perch Perca fluviatilis L. and bitterling Rhodeus sericeus (Pallas). Between 1997 and 1999, the fish were obtained from the rivers Morava and Kyjovka and surrounding water pools in the Czech Republic. The glochidia of two genera, Unio and Anodonta, were found. Anodonta glochidia were observed on 10 fish species, Unio glochidia on 17 fish species. There was a difference in spatial distribution of glochidia on the body of the host fish. Unio glochidia were predominantly located on the gills, whereas most Anodonta glochidia were found on the fins, with the highest numbers of glochidia were observed on the margin of the pectoral fins. For the gill apparatus, Unio glochidia were found predominantly on the second and third arch. Anodonta glochidia were predominantly found during winter and spring (November-May), whereas Unio glochidia were more abundant during May and June. The number of glochidia was positively correlated with fish length in perch highly infected by Anodonta glochidia and perch infected by Unio glochidia. Of the three fish species, the highest occurrence of parasites was found on perch with fewer observed on roach. In spite of the close relationship between bitterling and unionid mussels, glochidiosis was rare on this fish species.

The unionid Anodontites trapesilais (Lamarck, 1819) like most freshwater mussels is a parasite of fish. So it is trivial to assume that the availability of hosts is an important factor for the maintenance of unionoid populations. What seems obvious is not always so easy to demonstrate. This study proposes to investigate the effects of abiotic and biotic variables related to the incubation of larvae in A. trapesialis. For this, we estimate different biological indexes and try to capture the dimensionality of the fish, along with the temporal variation of environmental variables. From the application of a CCA, it was demonstrated that there was a synchronicity among the factors and variables proposed here, and we infer that the flood pulse acts as a synergistic factor in this process.Keywords: reproduction, freshwater mussels, fishes, host relationship, wetlands. After fertilization, the early stages of development occur in the inner demibranch (Bonetto and Ezcurra, 1962;1965). The planktonic larvae, called glochidium or lasidium, complete their development cycle as temporary parasites of fish (Fryer, 1970, Mansur et al., 1987. Around 27 days after fixation, they complete metamorphosis and unfasten themselves from the fish and become a benthic organism (Bonetto and Ezcurra, 1962;Castellanos and Landoni, 1990).Some limiting factors such as temperature (Bauer, 2000;Strayer, 2008;Oliveira et al. 2010), food availability and parasite-host interaction, influences directly in the reproductive dynamics of these mussels (Haag and Warren-Junior, 1997;Avelar and Mendonça, 1998;Beasley et al., 2000). To know which environmental factors are most important to each one of the reproduction attributes will depend on the combined effect provided by the environment in which these bivalves occur (Galbraith and Vaughn, 2009). Few studies have examined the environmental influences in the reproductive dynamics of the population and information is unknown related to the incubation period, elimination of larvae and parasite-host interaction for neotropical species.Anodontites trapesialis (Lamarck, 1819) (Unionoida, Mycetopodidae) is widely geographically distributed and may represent the highest percentage of benthic biomass in rivers, lakes and flood plains (Colle and Callil, 2012). Although on the national list of endangered species, (Brasil, 2004), this species can be found in abundance in farm ponds and fish farming (Guardia-Felipi and Silva-Souza, 2008) and has been considered a species for cultivation and potential source of protein (Tello-Panduro et al., 2003). ResumoO molusco bivalve, Anodontites trapesialis, tem sido indicado como fonte alternativa para a aqüicultura, por ser considerado um alimento de bom valor nutricional com um conteúdo protéico próximo ao do pescado. Suas conchas podem ser utilizadas como fertilizantes calcáreos e ser agregadas a alimentos de animais domésticos e o nácar pode ser utilizado para fabricar botões e artesanatos. No entanto, as larvas de A. trapesialis, que são do tipo lasidium, são parasitas obrigatórias de peixes de água doce e a introdução desse bivalve em tanques de piscicultura tem causado transtornos e prejuízos aos produtores. Nada se conhece, porém, sobre o seu desenvolvimento nesses ambientes. Por outro lado, ressalta-se que A. trapesialis consta da lista brasileira de espécies ameaçadas de extinção. No presente artigo são compiladas as informações presentes na literatura, em uma revisão detalhada, com o objetivo de apresentar o panorama geral do conhecimento acerca de Anodontites trapesialis e do parasitismo de peixes por suas larvas. Its shells can be utilized as fertilizer and mixed to the food of domestic animals, and the nacre can be used to manufacture buttons and crafts. However, the larvae of A. trapesialis, which are the lasidium type, are obligatory parasites of freshwater fishes, and the introduction of this bivalve in fish farm tanks have caused trouble and losses for producers. Nothing is known, however, about their development in these environments. On the other hand, it should be pointed out that A. trapesialis is on Brazil's list of species threatened with extinction. This article provides a compilation of information present in the literature, offering a detailed review, with the aim of presenting a general panorama of what is known about Anodontites trapesialis and its larval parasitism of fishes.
