“…Snails retreat into their shells, activate a facultative anaerobic metabolism (relying on the fermentation of glycogen, amino acids, and keto acids; for example, lactate levels increase 3-fold in the hepatopancreas of the snail Biomphalaria glabrata after 14 days of estivation; Bezerra et al 1999), and reduce their metabolic rates until the desiccation stress is over (Storey and Storey 1990;Bezerra et al 1999). It is interesting to note that desiccation of B. tenagophila does not interfere with the parasitic development of S. mansoni larvae (Ohlweiler and Kawano 2001).…”

“…The procedure described above may also have caused some desiccation of the snails (some authors use this term in the case of Biomphalaria; see Ohlweiler and Kawano 2001). However, since protein levels in the hepatopancreas were unaltered (see Results), we decided to use "estivation" to describe the dormancy observed in the snails when removed from their aquatic medium.…”

“…During aestivation, snails do not eat, water loss occurs (Bezerra et al, 1999), and oxygen consumption is decreased (von Brand et al, 1957). Ohlweiler and Kawano (2001) showed that immature larvae of S. mansoni survived and developed within aestivating B. tenagophila, although the survival of infected-aestivated snails was lower than that of uninfected-aestivated snails. Badger and Oyerinde (2004) noted that aestivation of B. pfeifferi did not affect the infectivity of S. mansoni cercariae, although the survival of cercariae from aestivated snails was reduced.…”

“…This genus is indicative of several environmental parameters, being very useful in paleoecological reconstructions. The populations of Biomphalaria usually live in lentic, shallow and very low energy environments, such as temporary puddles, marshes and shallow lakes, commonly with abundant aquatic vegetation (Cridland, 1967;Pieri et al, 1980;Olazarri, 1981aOlazarri, , 1981bBonetto et al, 1982;Vianey-Liaud & Lancastre, 1986;Ohlweiler & Kawano, 2001, 2002De Francesco, 2010;Hassan et al, 2011;Cabrera et al, 2018). A new species is described herein for the limestones of the Upper Cretaceous Queguay Formation, Uruguay.…”
