The effects of 24 h of exposure to underwater anoxia and 15 days of estivation (at 2627°C) on the enzymatic antioxidant system of the hepatopancreas of the freshwater snail Biomphalaria tenagophila (Planorbidae) are described. The effect of 24 h of recovery was also investigated. Catalase activity dropped by 31% during 24 h of anoxia, and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity was reduced by 43% during the 15 days of estivation. This is consistent with the overall decrease in metabolic rate during estivation or anoxia. Indeed, the heartbeat diminished by 2836% during estivation (determination was possible for only 4 days) and by 66% after 24 h of anoxia. On the other hand, selenium-dependent glutathione peroxidase (Se-GPX) activity increased during anoxia (from 10 to 14 mU/mg protein) and estivation (by 14%). Glutathione S-transferase (GST) and glutathione reductase activities remained unchanged during estivation and anoxia. Glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase activity was unchanged during estivation and recovery. Recovery restored SOD activity. Catalase, Se-GPX, and GST activities during recovery were significantly lower than those of the respective controls. Lipid peroxidation, determined as the level of thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances, was unchanged in the hepatopancreas after 15 days of estivation and 26 h of recovery from estivation. It is possible that the increase in Se-GPX activity during anoxia and estivation, and the maintenance of GST activity, are relevant in minimizing the effects of reactive oxygen species that can be formed upon resumption of aerobic metabolism. Thus, B. tenagophila may have a biochemical strategy of preparation for oxidative stress such as that observed in several other species of anoxia/hypoxia-tolerant animals.

Ohlweiler and Kawano (2001) showed that immature larvae of S. mansoni survived and developed within aestivating B. tenagophila, although the survival of infected-aestivated snails was lower than that of uninfected-aestivated snails. Badger and Oyerinde (2004) noted that aestivation of B. pfeifferi did not affect the infectivity of S. mansoni cercariae, although the survival of cercariae from aestivated snails was reduced.…”

The effects of aestivation or starvation on the neutral lipid and phospholipid content of Biomphalaria glabrata patently infected with Schistosoma mansoni were determined by high-performance thin-layer chromatography-densitometry. Infected-aestivated snails were maintained in a moist chamber at 24 +/- 1 C and a relative humidity of 98 +/- 1%. Infected-starved snails were maintained in artificial spring water (ASW) at 23 +/- 1 C without exogenous food. Infected snails (the controls) were maintained in ASW at 23 +/- 1 C and fed lettuce ad libitum. The 3 groups were maintained in the laboratory for 7 days, and then the lipids from the digestive gland-gonad complex (DGG) were extracted and analyzed by class. Infected-aestivated snails exhibited greater mortality rate and weight loss after 7 days than did the infected-starved snails. The steryl ester concentration in the infected-starved snails was significantly increased (P = 0.010) compared with the controls but not compared with infected-aestivated snails; the concentration of phosphatidylcholine in infected-aestivated snails was significantly decreased (P = 0.007) compared with the controls but not when compared with the infected-starved snails. Aestivation or starvation had a significant effect on the concentration of certain lipid classes in the DGG of B. glabrata infected with S. mansoni.

A new fossil species of Biomphalaria Preston is described for the Upper Cretaceous of Uruguay (Queguay Formation). The new species is characterized by a conspicuous spiral ornamentation, a unique character within the genus. This new Biomphalaria species is the third known for the Queguay Formation, in addition to B. walteri (Parodiz) and B. reversa Cabrera, Martínez & Norbis. They represent the oldest record of this genus worldwide.
