New species of Proteocephalus (Cestoda - Proteocephalidae) parasitic in fishes from the Paraná River, Paraná, Brazil

Abstract: Two species of the genus Proteocephalus (Cestoda: Proteocephalidae) were collected in fishes from the Paraná River. Proteocephalus vazzolerae n. sp. from Piaractus mesopotamicus and Proteocephalus chubbi, n. sp. from Gymnotus carapo are new species, and are described and illustrated. Proteocephalus vazzolerae n. sp. is characterized mainly by the number of testes and the development of vitellaria. Proteocephalus chubbi n. sp. can be differentiated from its congeners by a combination of characters which include… Show more

“…Knowledge of each South American species varies from short latin narratives of Dr ESlNG (1850) to recent detailed, well-illustrated accounts [SCHOLZ et aI. (1996) redescription of Proteocephalus macrophallus, descriptions of P. regoi Chambrier, Scholz & Vau cher, 1996 and Spasskyellina mandi Pavanelli & Takemoto, 1996]. ln most species, however, the number of worms studied was small, thus knowledge of intraspecific variation is limited.…”

“…De chambrier and Vaucher (1997) observed in this species that the uterine stem is in the ventral cortex and develops diverticula within the medulla as it is also the case in Endorchis piraeeba Woodland, 1934, another species parasitic in pimelodid catfishes in South America. This feature was also observed in Harriscolex kaparari (Woodland, 1935), Endorchis auchenipteri de chambrier et Vaucher, 1999, Gibsoniela meursaulti de chambrier et Vaucher, 1999, Nomimoscolex chubbi (Pavanelli et takemoto, 1995 and N. suspectus Zehnder, de chambrier, Vaucher et Mariaux, 2000, (Woodland 1934a, 1935b, Pavanelli and takemoto 1995, chambrier and Vaucher 1997, 1999, Zehnder et al 2000.…”

“…it is interesting to note that the ovary of M. gracilis, a parasite of Neotropical fishes, is smaller (0.6-1.8%) than those of Proteocephalus species found in fishes from all over the world (5.4-28.8%) ( Table 2 in de chambrier et al 2012) and those of Ophiotaenia species occurring in reptiles from the New World (1.9-5.5%) ( Table 2 in On the apical surface of the scolex, capilliform filitriches are the most common microthrix type, this type being the only one found in, for example, Lenhataenia megacephala (Woodland, 1934); Monticellia lenha Woodland, 1933;M. magna (rego, dos santos et silva, 1974); Nomimoscolex chubbi (Pavanelli et takemoto, 1995); N. sudobim Woodland, 1935; Proteocephalus hemioliopteri de chambrier et Vaucher, 1997;P. sulcatus (Klaptocz, 1906); Spatulifer maringaensis Pavanelli et rego, 1989 andS.…”
