On some family related parasites (Nematoda, Cucullanidae) from the marine fish Paralonchurus brasiliensis (Steindachner, 1875) (Pisces, Ostraciidae)

Abstract: Dichelyne (Cucullanellus) elongatus (Tornquist, 1931) Petter, 1974 and Cucullanus pulcherrimus Barreto, 1918, from Paralonchurus brasiliensis (Steind., 1875) are redescribed and two specimens of Dichelyne (Cucullanellus) sp. are also reported in this host, despite lack of previously, was again identified in Brazil since its original description and posterior illustration. The present findings represent also a new host record for the referred genera: Dichelyne Jagerskiold, 1902 and Cucullanus Mueller, 1777. D. … Show more

“…Other South American freshwater species reported by Petter (1995) differ from the species herein described either in not having a precloacal sucker, either in having lateral alae or different male body lengths and spicule lengths. In relation to the South American marine species, the new species differs from C. pulcherrimus, parasite of Perciformes (Barreto, 1922;Pinto et al, 1992), from C. dodsworthi, parasite of Tetraodontiformes (Barreto, 1922), from C. carioca, parasite of Perciformes (Vicente and Fernandes, 1973) and from C. rougetae, parasite of Perciformes (Vicente and Santos, 1974), in the smaller size of all the Brazilian species. Furthermore in C. pulcherrimus, C. dodsworthi and C. rougetae the papillae 4 are situated between papillae 6 and 7.…”

“…pinnai Travassos, Artigas andPereira, 1928 in pimelodid catfishes from Parana river. In marine fishes, five species have been reported from Brazil and French Guiana (Barreto, 1922;Vicente and Fernandes, 1973;Vicente and Santos, 1974;Petter, 1974 b;Pinto et al, 1992). The new species described above can be distinguished from the freshwater South American species as follows.…”

“…These nematodes were firstly identified as Dichelyne (Cucullanellus) elongatus (Törnquist, 1931), a species commonly reported from M. furnieri in South American Atlantic waters (Vicente et al 1989;Pinto et al 1992;Sardella et al 1995;Pereira and Costa 1996;Alves and Luque 1999, 2000a, b, 2001Pereira et al 2002). However, other species of Dichelyne have so far been reported from M. furnieri from the same area; Pinto et al (1970) described D. (C.) rodriguesi (Pinto, Fábio et Noronha, 1970) and Pereira and Costa (1996) revalidated D. (C.) amaruincai (Freitas, Vicente et IbaZez, 1969) and described D. (Dichelyne) micropogonii Pereira et Costa, 1996 from the same sample of this host species.…”
