Genotoxicity of plant extracts

Abstract: Aqueous extracts of seven species used in Brazilian popular medicine (Achyrocline satureoides, Iodina rhombifolia, Desmodium incanum, Baccharis anomala, Tibouchina asperior, Luehea divaricata, Maytenus ilicifolia) were screened to the presence of mutagenic activity in the Ames test (Salmonella/microsome). Positive results were obtained for A. satureoides, B anomala and L. divaricata with microsomal activation. As shown elsewhere (Vargas et al., 1990) the metabolites of A. satureoides extract also show the capa… Show more

“…2 The aqueous extract of L. divaricata presented genotoxic activity in the Ames test (Salmonella/ microsome) with microsomal activation. 5 However, a phytochemical screening of L.divaricata reported the presence of flavonoids, tannins and saponins. 4 In this paper we report the isolation and the structure elucidation of a new α-amyrin derivative, which was characterized as 3β-p-hydroxybenzoyloxytormentic acid and a mixture containing the maslinic acid.…”

“…Camparoto et al (2002) showed that infusions of M. ilicifolia no produce alterations on the cell cycle and chromosomes structure of onion root and bone-marrow cells, while Vargas et al (1991) demonstrated that the plant is not mutagenic in the AMES test using Salmonella typhimurium as biological model. The clinical toxicology of the M. ilicifolia has also been investigated in humans and the plant does not altered biochemical e hematologic parameters in the subjects (Tabach et al, 2002).…”

“…In situations where the ROS and FR production exceeds the defense capacity of the organism, a condition known as oxidative stress can occurs and provoke damages to important biomolecules, including DNA, proteins and membrane lipids, compromising cell general functions (Vargas et al, 1991).…”

“…Dados químicos e biológicos: presença de flavonóides, taninos e saponinas (Bianchi et al, 1989). Não foi encontrada atividade tóxica no ensaio de toxicidade aguda em camundongos nas doses 250 e 500 mg/Kg para extratos aquosos liofilizados (Bianchi et al, 1989) e mutagênica para o extrato aquoso no teste de Ames (Vargas et al, 1991).…”
