Um extrato metanólico das folhas de Luehea divaricata (Tiliaceae), vulgarmente conhecida no Brasil como "açoita-cavalo", forneceu um novo triterpeno caracterizado como ácido 3β-phidroxibenzoiloxitormentico [ácido 3β-(p-hidroxibenzoiloxi)-2α-hidroxiurs-12-en-28-óico], juntamente com uma mistura contendo o ácido maslínico, um triterpeno conhecido. As estruturas dos compostos foram estabelecidas por métodos espectroscópicos.A methanolic extract from leaves of Luehea divaricata (Tiliaceae), known in Brazil as "açoita-cavalo", yielded two triterpene: a novel characterized as 3β-p-hydroxybenzoyloxytormentic acid [3β-(p-hydroxybenzoyloxy)-2α-hydroxyurs-12-en-28-oic acid] and a mixture containing the maslinic acid. The new compound's structure was established by spectroscopic methods.

Antioxidant and genotoxic properties of Maytenus dasyclada: a comparative study in relation to Maytenus reference species

In these work the in vitro antioxidant activity and the in vivo genotoxicity of M. dasyclada was compared to the reference species M. aquifolium and M. ilicifolia. M. dasyclada showed in vitro antioxidant activity comparable to M. aquifolium but lower than M. ilicifolia, being that a inverse Pearson correlation between DPPH IC 50 values and total phenolic content was detected (-0.932). The carbonyl content of M. dasyclada and M. aquifolium extracts promoted a similar increase in protein oxidation in vivo, while M. ilicifolia no altered the carbonyl levels. The comet assay demonstrated that the three analyzed species promoted a low and similar level of genotoxicity; which is compatible with DNA damage induced by other medicinal plants and is partially recovered by a co-treatment with vitamin C. The data showed M. dasyclada as antioxidant activity in vitro, and that its genotoxic and pro-oxidant effects in vivo are comparable to the Maytenus reference species.Keywords: Maytenus ilicifolia, M. aquifolium, M. dasyclada, comet assay, antioxidant activity, phenolic pompounds. RESUMO:Este trabalho visa identificar as espécies comercializadas como quebra-pedras em Porto Alegre, verificar indícios de toxicidade e estabelecer padrões morfológicos para diferenciação das mesmas. São espécies utilizadas na medicina popular principalmente para afecções nos rins e bexiga bem como diuréticas. As 16 amostras foram adquiridas de 14 comerciantes atuantes em bancas fixas ou em feiras-livres. Realizou-se uma revisão bibliográfica para levantamento de dados referentes à utilização de plantas medicinais com o nome de quebra-pedras em diferentes cidades do Rio Grande do Sul. Indícios de toxicidade, dados químicos e biológicos destas plantas foram revisados em diferentes bases de dados e em bibliografia específica. Identificaram-se sete espécies comercializadas como quebra-pedras em Porto Alegre: Euphorbia prostrata e E. serpens (Euphorbiaceae), Phyllanthus niruri e P. tenellus (Phyllanthaceae), Desmodium incanum (Fabaceae), Cunila microcephala (Lamiaceae) e Heimia salicifolia (Lythraceae). Destas, as espécies de Phyllanthus e Euphorbia são as que apresentam maior semelhança morfológica quando comercializadas secas e fragmentadas.Unitermos: Quebra-pedras, medicina popular, morfologia.ABSTRACT: "Medicinal species sold as "quebra-pedras" in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil". The aims of this work were to identify the species sold as "quebra-pedras" in Porto Alegre, verify signs of toxicity and establish morphological patterns that help to distinguish such species. Those species are believed to be diuretic and are used in popular medicine mainly to treat kidney and bladder affections. The samples (16) were purchased from 14 sellers who work in permanent market stalls or in public marketplaces. A bibliographic revision gathered data on the use of medicinal plants called "quebra-pedras" in several cities of Rio Grande do Sul. Signs of toxicity, chemical and biological data of these plants were reviewed from different databases and specific bibliography. Seven species were identified among those sold as "quebra-pedras" in Porto Alegre: Euphorbia prostrata and E. serpens (Euphorbiaceae), Phyllanthus niruri and P. tenellus (Phyllanthaceae), Desmodium incanum (Fabaceae), Cunila microcephala (Lamiaceae) and Heimia salicifolia (Lythraceae). The greater morphological similarity when dried and fragmented plants are sold together was verified between Phyllanthus and Euphorbia.Keywords: "Quebra-pedras", popular medicine, morphology.
