Scanning electron microscopy of the male genitalia of Sarcophagidae (Diptera)

Abstract: The male genitalia of nine species of Sarcophagidae (Diptera) - Goniophyto honsuensis Rohdendorf, 1962, Tricharaea brevicornis (Wiedemann, 1830), Chaetoravinia derelicta (Walker, 1852), Austrohartigia spinigena (Rondani, 1864), Chrysagria duodecimpunctata Townsend, 1935, Boettcheria bisetosa Parker, 1914, Lipoptilocnema lanei Townsend, 1934, L. crispina (Lopes, 1938) and Euboettcheria alvarengai Lopes & Tibana, 1982 - were examined by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and the main morphological features are d… Show more

“…However, other than a few studies of selected taxa (e.g. Leite & Lopes, 1989; Lopes & Leite, 1990, 1991; Chaiwong et al. , 2007) SEM has not been used to homologize genitalic structures across a range of sarcophagine genera.…”

“…Roback (1954) and Sugiyama & Kano (1984) both used genitalic, mainly phallic, morphology to reconstruct the phylogeny of the Sarcophaginae, but the former suffers from a noncladistic approach and the latter from a very narrow systematic sampling through a strict focus on the Old World fauna. Lopes (1990) studied the phylogeny of the New World genera with male proclinate orbital bristles. Pape (1994) tested the monophyly of Blaesoxipha Loew, but also investigated the phylogenetic relationships of ten sarcophagine genera based on a groundplan scoring approach (Yeates, 1995).…”
