Hyperparasitism by helminths: new records of cestodes and nematodes in proteocephalid cestodes from South American siluriform fishes

Abstract: Proteocephalid cestode hyperparasites are reported from numerous proteocephalids occurring in pimelodid fishes in different regions of Brazil. In addition, three specimens of a nematode hyperparasite are reported from the proteocephalid cestode Choanoscolex abscissus from the pimelodid fish Pseudoplatystoma corruscans in Brazil. Previous records of cestode and nematode hyperparasites of cestodes are listed, and the possible identities of the Brazilian records are discussed.

“…The first reference to this kind of hyperparasite infestation was by Riggenbach (1896) in a scolex of Corallobothrium lobosum in Luciopimelodus pati. Recently, Rego & Gibson (1989) reported several cases of hyperparasitism of proteocephalideans occuring in pimelodid fishes, by as yet undetermined species of proteocephalideans.…”

“…None ofthese reports showed whether these larvae were obligate transmission stages, or, if infected fishes were facultative paratenic hosts. REGO & GIBSON (1989) found hyperparasitism of adult by larval proteocephalids. Jauella glandicephalus, Megalhylacus brooksi, Peltidocotyle rugosa and Travassiel/a avitellina from the intestines of Paulicea luelkeni, Choanoscolex abscissus from Pseudoplatystoma corruscans, an unidentified proteocephalid from Pseudoplatystomafascialus, Proteocephalus sp.…”

“…In the São Francisco River Basin, the records on the parasite fauna of pimelodids were established for Conorhynchos conirostris (Valenciennes, 1840) by Pinto et al (1974), Pinto and Noronha (1976), Vicente et al (1985), and Brasil-Sato and Santos (2005); for Pseudoplatystoma corruscans (Spix & Agassiz, 1829) by Rego and Gibson (1989), Kohn et al (1997), and Corrêa and Brasil-Sato (2008); for Bergiaria westermanni (Lütken, 1874) by Moreira et al (1991) and Vicente and Pinto (1999); for P. maculatus by BrasilSato and Pavanelli ( , 1999Pavanelli ( , 2000Pavanelli ( , 2004, Brasil-Sato (2003), and Monteiro et al (2010); and for P. pohli by Martins et al (2012). In this last work, the authors have established the first record of a parasite species, Prosthenhystera obesa (Diesing, 1850), in the gall bladder of P. pohli.…”
