Biologia do Triatoma vitticeps (Stal, 1859) em condições de laboratório (Hemiptera: Reduviidae: Triatominae): II. Resistência ao jejum

Abstract: Following the study on the biology of Triatoma vitticeps (Gonçalves et al., 1988) observations have been made on its resistance to starvation. Of the 286 eggs obtained only 201 hatched and reached the intended stage for observation. The others did not eclode, neither reached the ecdisis nor died, without explanation. The nymphs were kept, separately, in Borrel flasks and properly listed. The blood-meal was performed in mice, although the insects were kept without feeding as soon as moulted. The starvation was … Show more

“…In this last stage the female insect was more resistant than the male (33.6 and 23.7 days, respectively). Data reported by Silva (1985) and Gonçalves et al (1989) demonstrate alternating results: sometimes higher for the male and sometimes higher for the female.…”

“…These different results were probably influenced by laboratory conditions, such as different blood sources supplied and variations in environmental conditions (humidity and temperature). The highest averages were reported by Gonçalves et al (1989), who used mice as alimentary source. In our study, adult insects demonstrated a lower resistance in comparison with other stages.…”

“…The diversity of blood meals may be associated with the low aggressiveness to feeding (Diotaiuti et al 4 1987, Gonçalves et al, 6 1988) which forces the insect out to find another host to feed itself.…”

“…Data from National Health Foundation ("FUNASA") signalized T. vitticeps presence in the northern region of Rio de Janeiro state, and the number of notifications on adult form occurrence was increasing (Lopes et al, 2009;Dias et al, 2010). Although studies regarding T. vitticeps biology have suggested that this species would not represent a major concern from epidemiologic point of view (Dias, 1956;Heitzmann-Fontenelle, 1980;Silva, 1985;Diotaiuti et al, 1987;Gonçalves et al, 1988Gonçalves et al, , 1989, reports of this species frequently invading the domicile with high T. cruzi infection rates , Gonçalves, 2000 indicated its study was required. With sylvatic habit and unknown habitat, this species ecobiology was studied in further details at Triunfo district, Santa Maria Madalena city (RJ), in three areas (A, B and C) (Figure 1).…”
