Population dynamics of aquatic snails in Pampulha reservoir

Abstract: An attempt was made to determine more accurately the density of molluskan populations in the Pampulha reservoir, using the quadrate method, intending to detect the fluctuation of the populations density, the habitat conditions and the possible competitive interactions among Biomphalaria tenagophila, Melanoides tuberculata, Pomacea haustrum and Biomphalaria glabrata, through the analysis of populational parameters. Among the most significative facts observed in the reservoir it has to be mentioned: the almost d… Show more

“…The greater abundance of this species is due to its capacity to explore different environments and tolerance to limnological variation and different types of substrates (Freitas et al, 1987). A low biodiversity of mollusks was found in the studied reservoirs, probably due to the presence of the exotic mollusk species M. tuberculata.…”

“…De origem asiática, são encontrados em muitos países tropicais e subtropicais (FREITAS et al, 1987;MADSEN;FRANDSEN, 1989;SILVA, 1992), cuja capacidade para colonizar vários tipos de habitats limita ou exclui certas espéci-es de pulmonados, particularmente aqueles relacionados à esquistossomose (POINTIER;…”

“…Both species can cause modification of community . Melanoides tuberculata is widespread in Brazil (Fernandez et al 2003, Thiengo et al 2007, reaching high population densities that affect native species (Freitas et al 1987, Giovanelli et al 2003, Braga et al 2014. Furthermore, it is the first host of different parasites that causes human diseases (Vaz et al 1986, Guimarães et al 2001, Pinto & Melo, 2010.…”
