An outbreak of dengue virus at Rio de Janeiro - 1986

Abstract: Dengue virus type 1 has been isolated in Aedes albopictus cell strain, from sera of patients living in the Nova Iguaçu county, by Rio de Janeiro. The clinical picture was characterized by fever, headache, retrobulbar pain, backache, pains in the muscles and the joints and prostration. Studies in paired sera confirmed the presence of recent infection by dengue virus type 1. The outbreak reached adjacent areas, including Rio de Janeiro city (May, 1986).

“…albopictus C6/36 cell line have been routinely used for dengue diagnosis in Brazil (Schatzmayr et al 1986, Figueiredo et al 1992, Vasconcelos et al 1993). However, due to its speed and sensitivity, PCR has been adopted as an alternative method in dengue diagnosis (Laille et al 1991, Chungue et al 1993, Morita et al 1994.…”

“…Dengue virus activity increased significantly in Brazil after the introduction of dengue virus type 1 (DEN-1) into the State of Rio de Janeiro in 1986 (Schatzmayr et al 1986). DEN-1 was the only serotype circulating in the country until 1990, when dengue virus type 2 (DEN-2) was also introduced (Nogueira et al 1990).…”

“…After ingestion of infected blood, the mosquito is able to transmit the virus following an extrinsic incubation period of 8-12 days. In the state of Rio de Janeiro, serotypes 1, 2 and 3 have already been isolated [1][2][3]. Dengue virus type 3 (DENV-3) was isolated for the first time in December 2000 and was the principal agent of the 2002 epidemic.…”

“…This municipality is located 25 km away from Rio de Janeiro downtown in greater Rio and was the same municipality where DEN-1 was first isolated in 1986 (Schatzmayr et al 1986). Nova Iguaçu has reported subsequent epidemics of DF, having DEN-1 and DEN-2 viruses isolated during the summer 2000-2001.…”
