The rat adrenal gland is poorly parasitized during the experi mental infection with Y strain of Trypanosoma cruzi. In both cortical and medullary regions, the parasitism peaked at day 10 and was characterized by the predominance of single amastigotes over nests containing 2 or more parasites. After day 10 of infec tion, the tissue parasitism dropped rapidly to become practically null at day 32 of infection. In cortical tissue, the amastigotes occurred mainly inside the endocrine cells. In the medulla, they found mainly in glial cells and non-identified stromal cells. In both cortex and medulla, inflammatory processes were found till day 20 of infection. Our data do not support the hypothesis that a corticoid rich environment would favor T. cruzi parasitism in adrenal medulla.Résumé : La glande surrénale chez le rat au cours de la trypanosomiase américaine expérimentale : étude immunocytochimique du parasitisme tissulaire.La glande surrénale est peu parasitée au cours de l'infection expérimentale avec la souche Y de Trypanosoma cruzi. Dans le cortex comme dans la médullaire, le parasitisme atteint son maximum le 10e jour d'infection et est caractérisé par une prédo minance d'amastigotes isolés sur les sites contenant deux ou plu sieurs parasites. However, the only finding that remains incontestable is that, as described by that author: Trypanosoma cruzi penetrates in the host's cells and multiplies in amastigote form to create pseudocysts that break and give rise to an inflammatory reaction that scars as a fibrosis.…”

This study consists of a broad review on what is known and what should be improved regarding knowledge of Chagas disease, not only through analysis on the main studies published on the topics discussed, but to a large extent based on experience of this subject, acquired over the past 50 years (1961-2011). Among the subjects covered, we highlight the pathogenesis and evolution of infection by Trypanosoma cruzi, drugs in use and new strategies for treating Chagas disease; the serological tests for the diagnosis and the controls of cure the infection; the regional variations in prevalence, morbidity and response to treatment of the disease; the importance of metacyclogenesis of T. cruzi in different species of triatomines and its capacity to transmit Chagas infection; the risks of adaptation of wild triatomines to human dwellings; the morbidity and need for a surveillance and control program for Chagas disease in the Amazon region and the need to prioritize initiatives for controlling Chagas disease in Latin America and Mexico and in non-endemic countries, which is today a major international dilemma. Finally, we raise the need for to create a new initiative for controlling Chagas disease in the Gran Chaco, which involves parts of Argentina, Bolivia and Paraguay.

As soon as they were published early in 1909, Chagas's articles on Trypanosoma cruzi and American trypanosomiasis became the topic of discussions in France. The description of T. cruzi and Chagas disease was added to parasitology textbooks as early as 1912, and elicited active research, particularly on the part of French parasitologist Emile Brumpt. He contributed towards eluciding the lifecycle of T. cruzi and the different ways it could infect humans. Laboratory research on T. cruzi was interrupted by First World War and was not resumed afterwards on the same scale, although interest in the epidemiology of Chagas disease continued.
