Dial behavioral responses of Metamysidopsis elongata atlantica (Crustacea, Mysida) to gradients of salinity and temperature

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Metamysidopsis atlantica elongata (Bascescu, 1968) is a common mysid in the surf zone of sandy beaches from the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, where it is frequently recorded forming dense aggregations. Trough laboratory trials, behavioral responses to salinity (10, 20, 25, 28, 30, 40 e 45), temperature (10, 15, 20, 30±1°C) and light (yes/no) were tested using adult males, adult females and juveniles. Although there was no response to temperature, the species showed clear response to salinity a… Show more

“…Metamysidopsis e. atlantica usually is the most abundant and common species in coastal and estuarine waters of the south/south-east Brazilian coast (Bersano, 1994;Tararam et al, 1996;authors' own unpublished data), consequently it is the most studied species in this region. Studies relating to rearing techniques, feeding rates, moulting cycle, growth and response to gradients of temperature and salinity were carried out under laboratory conditions (Rörig et al, 1997;Gama & Zamboni, 1999;Gama et al, 2002Gama et al, , 2006Gama et al, , 2011 distribution Brazil: São Paulo, Ubatuba (Bȃcescu, 1968c), São Sebastião (Fries, 1999), Una do Prelado River (Lansac Tôha & Lima, 1993) and Cananeia estuary (Almeida Prado, 1973Prado, , 1974Tararam et al, 1996); Santa Catarina (Rörig et al, 1997; south-west atlantic mysids geographical distribution Resgalla, 2011); Rio Grande do Sul, Tramandaí Beach (Avila et al, 2009), Lagoa dos Patos estuary (Gama, 2008;Avila et al, 2011) and Cassino Beach (Bersano, 1994;Avila et al, 2011).…”

“…Later, studies by local and foreign scientists broadened the knowledge about regional mysid species richness with the description of new species from Brazilian (Bȃcescu, 1968a(Bȃcescu, , b, c, 1969(Bȃcescu, , 1984(Bȃcescu, , 1986Silva, 1970aSilva, , b, 1971aSilva, , b, 1972Silva, , 1974Silva, , 1979aReis & Silva, 1987; and Argentine waters (Hoffmeyer, 1993;Carcedo et al, 2013). In the late 1990s, Murano (1999) performed the most comprehensive review available to date of the mysidacean fauna (orders Mysida and Lophogastrida) of the South Atlantic Ocean, considering marine coastal and deep waters, including geographical and vertical distribution, detailed descriptions and illust...…”
