Comunidade de Carabidae (Coleoptera) em manchas florestais no Pantanal, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brasil

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Carabid community (Coleoptera) in forest patches in Pantanal, State of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. This work addresses the effects of the size, flooding susceptibility and vegetation complexity on ground beetles community structure (Coleoptera, Carabidae) in forest patches (capões) in the sub-regions Miranda and Abobral of the Pantanal, State of Mato Grosso do Sul. Thirty pitfall traps were run for six days per month, in six forest patches between October 1998 and October 1999. A total of 2,071 indiv… Show more

“…Uehara‐Prado et al () found 14 carabid species either in disturbed or undisturbed sites in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest located in the eastern region of São Paulo, while in three environments in the Araucaria humid forest of southern Brazil, Moraes et al () observed 14 carabid species in the primary forest, 13 species in a secondary forest and 10 species in a Pinus forest. However, Vieira et al () reported a carabid species richness higher than the one found in this study; they found 64 species in six forest patches (capões) in the Pantanal of Mato Grosso de Sul.…”

“…The epigaeic carabid assemblage in tropical dry forest was species poor but with high dominance, like in other tropical carabid communities (Paarmann et al 2002;Vieira et al 2008;Rosero 2010). Only 12% of the species collected had more than 10 individuals, while 46% were singletons or doubletons.…”

“…The lowest lands in the Pantanal are periodically flooded, whereas the higher areas usually are not, except during the major pluriannual floods (Vieira et al 2008). During normal floods, the dry areas serve as "islands" or shelters, for animals that otherwise would not survive the floodings.…”

“…Mechanisms that determine diversity in Pantanal environments have been only partly investigated (Suárez et al 2004;Corrêa et al 2006;Feener et al 2008;Vieira et al 2008). Moreover, there is a lack of studies in these environments, which concentrates most of endemic biodiversity, using taxa-models, such as ants.…”
