The natural areas of the Coastal Plain of Rio Grande do Sul (CPRS) have suffered fragmentation due to anthropic action. The faunal surveys offer a low-cost method to quickly evaluate environmental alterations, and Syrphidae flies are often used as models in this kind of study. We aimed to ascertain the diversity of Syrphidae in the South region of Brazil by estimating its species' richness, and to use this data to identify new areas for conservation. In this survey Malaise traps were installed for 8 days in the CPRS, which was divided into five regions. Each region was subdivided into seven collecting areas and each of those areas received four traps, totaling 140 traps. A total of 456 Syrphidae individuals from 18 genera and 49 species were collected. In Region 1, there were nine exclusive species; in Region 2, there were three; in Region 3, there were 13, ten of which came from Estação Ecológica do Taim (ESEC Taim). In the Individual-based rarefaction analysis, Region 1 possessed the largest number of expected species out of the regions in the CPRS; we found 97% of these species. This insect collection effort, as one of the first in the CPRS, has broadened the known geographic distributions of 11 species of Syrphidae, and also indicated areas to be conserved. Additionally, it gave support for expanding ESEC Taim and creating new areas of conservation in Region 1, in Arroio Pelotas and Arroio Corrientes.

COMPARATIVE STUDY OF POLLINATION OF Mangifera indica L. IN CONVENTIONAL AND ORGANIC CROPS IN THE REGION OF THE SUBMÉDIO SÃO FRANCISCO VALLEYABSTRACT-This study was carried out in 2005 and 2006, in a commercial mango Tommy Atkins plantation on Frutex Farm, in Petrolina-PE. The objective was to verify the floral biology as well as the comparative study of behaviour, the frequency and the seasonality of the floral visitors in both organic and conventional crops. The mango tree inflorescences present male and hermaphrodite flowers (2:1), with predominance of the first ones in the basis of the panicles. The anthesis is diurnal, asynchronic, with liberation of strong and sweat odour. The flowers present dicogamy, characterized by the anthers dehiscence 24 hours after the anthesis. The nectar production is continuous and in small amounts, on an average of 0,045μL/flower. Concerning the flower visitors, 21 species were registered, belonging to the orders Diptera, Hymenoptera, Lepidoptera and Odonata. Apis mellifera was the most frequent visitant in both types of crops. Among the Diptera, Belvosia bicincta (17,7%) and Musca domestica (10,2%) were the most frequent visitors in conventional and organic crops, respectively. The diversity and number of visitors were higher in the organic crop. The use of agrotoxics during the flowering period reduced the visit of bees (50%) and Diptera (20%). Because of its behaviour, frequency and active movement in the inflorescences, Apis mellifera was considered as the most efficient pollinator of the crop for the region of the São Francisco Submédio Valley.

Despite of the richness and abundance of the Syrphidae in the Neotropical Region, the bibliography about the family for this area is relatively scarce. Identification of specimens belonging to this family and, more specifically for those of the subfamily Syrphinae, becomes difficult because of the great variation between the species of a single genus. With the purpose in assisting specialists and non-specialists in identifying the genera of Syrphidae a pictorial key for the subfamilies Eristalinae, Microdontinae and Syrphinae and for the Syrphinae genera occurring in the states of Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina and Paraná, Southern Brazil was prepared. Species of eleven genera have been recorded for the region:
