Ocorrência e ecologia trófica de quatro espécies de Astyanax (Characidae) em diferentes rios da bacia do rio Tibagi, Paraná, Brasil

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Occurrence and trophic ecology of four species of Astyanax (Characidae) in different rivers of the Tibagi River Basin, Paraná, Brazil. Stretches of the Rivers Fortaleza, Iapó and Tibagi were monthly sampled with gillnets of different mesh sizes and castnets from May 2001 to April 2002 in the Tibagi River basin. Specimens of four species of the Astyanax genera were captured. In order to assess how they use habitat and food resources in the different rivers, their constancy was calculated and the numbe… Show more

“…Astyanax species have omnivorous diets, which are composed of animal and vegetal items, both autochthonous and allochthonous in origin (Esteves, 1996;Andrian et al, 2001;Vilella et al, 2002;Cassemiro et al, 2002;Gomiero and Braga, 2003;Bennemann et al, 2005;Mazzoni and Costa, 2007). However, some studies report that Astyanax has omnivorous/herbivorous (e.g.…”

“…Furthermore, some of the literature on Astyanax reports feeding changes (e.g. Bennemann et al, 2005) which may be related to spatial changes in habitat (Schlosser, 1982).…”

“…It is commonly found in the Upper Paraná River basin (Garutti and Britski, 2000), where the Alagados Reservoir is located . A peculiar characteristic of A. paranae is its restricted distribution to low order rivers (Godoy, 1975;Castro and Casatti, 1997;Garutti and Britski, 2000;Vilella et al, 2002;Pavanelli and Caramaschi, 2003;Benedito-Cecilio et al, 2004) where it forages predominantly on the insects and plant matter (Castro and Casatti, 1997;Vilella et al, 2002;Ferreira, 2004;Bennemann et al, 2005). A. paranae has also been described as a short life cycle species (Barbieri, 1992a).…”

“…Species such as A. bimaculatus have flexible feeding habits and are able to reproduce in several types of habitats (Bennemann et al, 2000). These characteristics, along with their common frequency throughout the study may explain their abundance in Taperoá II reservoir.…”
