Osteoderm morphology in recent and fossil euphractine xenarthrans. -Acta Zoologica (Stockholm) 90: 339-351The presence of osteoderms within the integument, forming a carapace, is one of the most distinctive features of armadillos with the external morphology of these elements forming the basis of most systematic schemes. This is especially true for fossil taxa, where these elements are most frequent in the palaeontological record. A detailed study of osteoderms from the cephalic shield and different regions of the dorsal armour of Chaetophractus villosus (Euphractinae, Xenarthra) was made and compared to those of the extant genus Dasypus (Dasypodinae, Xenarthra), and the extinct genus †Eutatus. Three distinct histological zones were recognized: outer and inner zones are thin, formed by regular compact bone, the middle zone is thicker, with large cavities that contain mainly adipose tissue, hair follicles, and sweat and sebaceous glands. The internal structure of †Eutatus (also a member of Euphractinae) osteoderms is close to that of C. villosus, consistent with the notion that these taxa are phylogenetically closely related. In contrast, Dasypus shows marked differences. Dasypus shows hair follicles associated with both gland types (sweat and sebaceous) and connected to foramina on the external surface. Although not observed in adult C. villosus, it has been documented during embryonic development, only to atrophy later in ontogeny. Furthermore, the presence of red bone marrow is rare in C. villosus, but widespread in Dasypus novemcinctus osteoderms. These results suggest an early split of both subfamilies and support the hypothesis that the Euphractinae are more derived than the Dasypodinae.

The spleen of a specialy adapted mammal: The little hairy armadillo Chaetophractus vellerosus, (Xenarthra, Dasypodidae). A Light and electron microscopic study. Int. J. Morphol., 24(3):339-348, 2006. SUMMARY:The spleen is a multifunctional organ. Its microarchitecture reflects so well the phylogeny as the adaptation to niche in each animal group and inclusive in each species.Armadillos, as ancient and isolated mammals, show a mixture of ancestral and modern structures. In this work the microanatomy and cytology of the spleen of the little hairy armadillo Chaetophractus vellerosus was studied. The material was fixed and processed according to the typical methods for light and electron microscopy.Results show a cumulative medium sized spleen with the typical pulps. The white pulp is well developed but less defined than in other armadillos. The presence of follicular-dendritic-like cells and interdigitant dendritic-like cells, as well as clusters of immunocompetent cells agrees with an active immunological activity. The red pulp is a meshwork of circulatory spaces and cells. The presence of splenic sinusoids is recognized for the first time in the genus. Hemopoietic tissue is less developed than in other Euphractini. The microarchitecture and size of the spleen of C. vellerosus is discussed in a phylogenetic and adaptive context.

Chaetophractus villosus (Desmarest, 1804) is commonly known as the large hairy armadillo. It is one of two living species of Chaetophractus. Like all armadillos, it bears a dorsal carapace of ossified dermal scutes covered by epidermal scales. Dorsal hair is sparse, long, and black and brown. This semifossorial armadillo inhabits grasslands, savannas, steppes, forests, and even degraded areas such as agroecosystems of Argentina, the “Gran Chaco” of Bolivia and Paraguay, and southern Chile. Chaetophractus villosus is omnivorous–carnivorous. It is listed as “Least Concern” (LC) on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species, and is mainly affected by hunting, persecution as an agricultural pest, and vehicle collisions.
