RESUMO: (Anatomia foliar de Rudgea decipiens Müll.Arg. e R. macrophy/la Benth. [Rubiaceae]). São apresentados dados sobre a anatomia das folhas de Rudgea decipiens e R. macrophylla (Rubiaceae). Ambas ocorrem 'na Floresta de Tijuca (Mata Atlãntica), Rio de Janeiro. As folhas são hipostomáticas, com estômatos do tipo paralelocítico, dotadas de mesofilo dorsiventral, feixes vasculares do tipo colateral, papilas na epiderme abaxial e cutícula estriada. Em R. macrophylla, destaca-se a ocorrência de estômatos peculiares.Palavras-chave: Anatomia foliar, Rudgea, Rubiaceae.ABSTRACT: (Leaf anatomy of Rudgea decipiens Müll.Arg. and R. macrophy/la Benth. [Rubiaceae]). Anatomical charactellstics of Rudgea decipiens and R. macrophy/la leaves were examined. The two species grow in Floresta da Tijuca (Mata Atlântica), Rio de Janeiro municipality. The leaves are hipostomatics, with parallelocytic stomata, dorsiventral mesophyll, colateral vascular bundles, papillae on the lower surface and striate cuticle. The stomata show peculiar aspects in R. macroplzylla.

“…Members of the Rubiaceae family share common anatomical features, including hypoestomatic sheets, dorsiventral mesophyll, paracytic stomata, and vascular collateral bundles (Metcalf and Chalk, 1959). The presence of domains is also a common feature in this family (Barros 1959, Moraes et al, 2011. These characteristics are present in Psychotria, along with the presence of styloid crystals and alkaloids in the mesophyll cells (Moraes et al, 2011), as well as a defined structure of the vascular bundle of the petiole, which appears to be diagnostic for the genus (Martínez-Cabrera et al, 2009).…”

Psychotria fractistipula L.B.Sm, R.M. Klein & Delprete (Rubiaceae) is found in the existing Atlantic Forest in the South of Brazil, in the Paraná and Santa Catarina States. The members of Rubiaceae are characterized chemically by the presence of alkaloids, some pharmacological properties of which include antifungal, antibacterial, analgesic, antioxidant, antimutagenic, and antiviral activities. In this study, we report the results of anatomical, morphological, and histochemical analyses of the leaves and stems of the Rubiaceae family member, P. fractistipula. The anatomical analysis involved of light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Morpho-anatomical and histochemical characterization were made using standard methodology. The isolated compounds were identified by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectroscopic analysis. The following structures are highlighted as the distinctive features of the species: presence of petiolate leaves and a petiole base, leaf blade with smooth cuticle on both surfaces, paracytic stomata, and, dorsiventral mesophyll and presence of trichomes on the leaves and stems. Phytosteroids, identified as β-sitosterol and campesterol, were observed in the hexane fraction of the stem. Future studies should focus on the isolation of other fractions of interest and their characterization through specific biological and cytotoxicity assays.

Resumen Notopleura agostinii es una especie endémica del Parque Nacional Henri Pittier. Se estudió la anatomía de la lámina foliar en dos poblaciones de esta especie, con el fin de relacionarla con el hábitat en el cual éstas se desarrollan. Las muestras foliares fueron colectadas en plantas creciendo en la selva nublada de transición (1100 m de altitud) y en la selva nublada propiamente dicha (1350 m de altitud), se fijaron en FAA y se procesaron siguiendo técnicas clásicas usadas en microscopía óptica. Se describió la anatomía foliar y se determinaron algunas variables anatómicas cuantitativas. Las características anatómicas de la lámina foliar mostraron la presencia de rasgos higromórficos: pocas capas de parénquima en empalizada con algunas células en forma de embudo en este tejido, parénquima esponjoso de arreglo laxo, estomas relativamente grandes y tejido de sostén escaso, siendo estos caracteres más marcados cuando la especie crece en la selva nublada propiamente dicha (1350 m de altitud).
