Prevalência, reconhecimento e controle da hipertensão arterial sistêmica no estado do Rio Grande do Sul

Abstract: Prevalence of systemic arterial hypertension in the state of Rio Grande do Sul has been remained at constant levels for the past decades, and the population's level of awareness of it has improved slightly. However, the control level of systemic arterial hypertension has not increased. This study allowed the definition of a target group -- elderly, obese individuals with low educational level -- for both diagnostic campaigns and better control of blood pressure levels.

“…We observed a direct association between prevalence of hypertension and age, in accordance with other studies 5,[10][11][12][13][14][15] . Regarding schooling, there was an inverse association with the prevalence of hypertension, which is in agreement with the results obtained in several studies 12,[15][16][17] .…”

“…9 The reasons for accelerated evidence of arteriosclero-for coronary heart disease in RS. 7 The sample was composed of 1,066 subjects drawn from a cluster random sampling according to the following parameters: 1) population size: infinite; 2) error (absolute accuracy): 3%; 3) expected prevalence: 50% (maximum variability); 4) confidence level: 95%. To ensure the study would be representative of the urban population in RS, the sample was calculated according to the population of the municipality where each one of the 19 coordination offices of the State Health Department were based, thus accounting for the 19 micro-regions in the state.…”

“…Some studies have evidenced the relationship of low income and educational level with hypertension 15,16 , in addition to their influence on adhesion to treatment 9,17 . The educational level was such an important variable that it was maintained in the final logistic regression model for arterial hypertension, because those who were able only to read/write or had only elementary education had greater chances to develop the condition as compared with those with higher education.…”
