This study includes an economic analysis of the dynamics and prognosis of the forest structure of an area under sustainable forest management in the Amazon, in the primary production of tropical roundwood. It analyzes measurements taken between 2001 and 2011 and carries out forest forecasting for the period from 2001 to 2021 with the application of the Markov Matrix Chain. The variables measured by the probability matrix were transformed into equivalent annual rates and compared over the same period to the Brazilian macroeconomic indicators of gross domestic product (GDP) and the real interest rate of primary roundwood production (TJLP). The valuation of tree density utilized a series of average prices of world imports and exports of roundwood. Between 2001 and 2011, the parameters of the forest dynamics without valuation were similar to the TJLP (1.4% per year) and, when valued, the rates were close to the GDP of 3.5% per year. The forecast from 2001 to 2021 indicates that unrated economic groups behave in a similar way to the TJLP of 1% per annum and to the GDP of 2.2% per year, except the recovery category, which has a negative rate of 1.9% per year. The monitoring of tropical forests allows the achievement of economic indexes capable of assessing the anthropic and natural impacts in short periods of analysis and projecting them over time on natural capital.

The fires that occur in the Amazon are as damaging as the deforestation is. There is a need for further long-term studies on dynamics of tree communities in forests affected by fires. In the present study we evaluated the dynamics of tree species, before and after an accidental fire that occurred in 1997 in an experimental area of terra firme forest in the Floresta Nacional do Tapajós, in western Pará State, Brazil. Approximately 3500 trees with diameter measured at 1.30 m above ground (DBH) ≥ 5 cm were botanically identified and measured in 12 permanent plots of 0.25 ha (50 m x 50 m), in 1983, 1987, 1989, 1995, 2008 and 2012. Analyses of survival, mortality and recruitment of trees were performed. The results showed that although the fire has increased the mortality and recruitment rates after 15 years, the highest mortality occurred on trees with smaller diameters (DBH < 30 cm), so the fire did not affect the survival of large trees in the long term, explaining why the reduction in density of living trees has not greatly influenced the decrease in basal area in the burned forest.

ABSTRACT:The sustainability of forest management is supported by the natural regeneration of species, whose mechanisms have been investigated by foresters and ecologists. Numerous studies have addressed the dynamics of tropical forests, always based on a previously existing vegetation and fl oristic composition. However, in assessing the population dynamics of isolated species, concepts such as recruitment and ingrowth, generally taken as synonyms, can express distinct principles that will be discussed in this review, whose aim is to analyze the strategies of natural regeneration of tree species in tropical forests and models used to evaluate its dynamics, some of which show mathematical indeterminacy in evaluating recruitment and ingrowth. The Rate of Natural Regeneration (NR) proposed in this study represents an approach that eliminates this problem of mathematical indeterminacy. Strategies for natural regeneration of tree species include concepts such as seed or seedling banks, and classifi cation in ecological groups as pioneer and climax species based on seed size, germination, seedling establishment, demand for gaps, etc. The classifi cation based on the diameter distribution of tree species considers that this structure expresses their life story, as the result of the interaction of genetic factors with biotic and abiotic factors of the ecosystem. Therefore, many timber species whose static natural regeneration does not exist in the primary forest, but present mature trees, have as regeneration strategy a strong dependence on disturbances to regenerate and grow. Thereat, the lack of continuous and decreasing distribution cannot prevent their use via forest management. RESUMO: A sustentabilidade do manejo fl orestal está apoiada na regeneração natural das espécies, cujos mecanismos têm sido investigados por silvicultores e ecologistas. Inúmeros trabalhos têm tratado da dinâmica das fl orestas tropicais, sempre partindo de uma vegetação e composição fl orística previamente existente.
