Show more

“…In fishes, the seasonal cycle of nutritional reserves, such as fat, follows a pattern associated with reproduction (Favero et al 2010;Freitas et al 2011;Espírito-Santo et al 2013), when fishes reduce feeding activity and use the energy stored in fat for gonadal maturation (Santos et al 2010).…”

“…The increase in the values of the river and pluviometric precipitation levels seems to be the ecologic factor that is important in the phenomenon of tropical fish reproduction, such as in Pseudoplatystoma fasciatum (Romagosa et al, 2003); Prochilodus brevis (Chellappa et al, 2009); Heros efasciatus (Favero et al, 2010); Cichlasoma orientale (Gurgel, et al, 2011); and Cichla kelberi (Siqueira-Silva et al, 2013), acting as a decisive factor in the final maturation of the gamete and in spawning (Baldisserotto, 2002).…”

“…H. efasciatus spawn during October and December, presumably so that the eggs will hatch during the flood season (Favero et al, 2010). Fecundity of individuals has been reported to be low (Favero et al., 2010), suggesting that populations could be highly susceptible to rapid ecological change.…”
