The stimulatory effect of male agouti (Dasyprocta prymnolopha) on the onset of female puberty

Abstract: The objective of this research was to analyze female agouti puberty. We did not observe the onset of puberty when the females were raised without males. When an adult male was put together with other adults and no cycling females, the onset of estrous cycle was observed after 10 to 60 days. When the young females were raised with a male, the onset of puberty was reached at 9 months. We concluded that the male agouti influences the onset of puberty in females, and that the dominant female, apparently, inhibits … Show more

“…Knowledge of reproductive biology is important in establishing programs for the conservation and production in situ and ex situ of wildlife (Andrabi and Maxwell 2007;Fickel et al 2007). One of the strategies to attain this knowledge is the studying the attainment of puberty in the animal to obtain valuable information for proper reproductive management practices, the selection of individuals, increase in productivity and efficiency, and for genetic improvement (Guimarães et al 2009). In males, puberty is associated with the beginning of spermatogenesis.…”

“…These reports recommended more detailed research to generate additional evidence on ovulation in D. prymnolopha. 17 Further meaningful comparisons and or contrasts are not possible because of the sporadic reporting on these three species. Generally, the evidence revealed through the published literature on the male reproductive system suggests that close relationships do exist, such as the genetic classification of the Dasyprocta species.…”

“…In addition, they possess four long and curved incisor teeth, whose macroscopic characteristics reveal structure similar to that of other mammals (Oliveira et al, 2012). Between males and females there is no sexual dimorphism; therefore, to differentiate them, it is necessary to perform sexing through palpation, where the difference between the male's prominent penis and the female's two vaginal folds, forming the vulva, is easily observed (Guimarães et al, 2009).…”
