Show more

“…Alves, unpubl. data), and that in other stingless bees where occasional polygyny has been found, normally no more than two laying queens coexist at the same time (Silva, 1972;Witter and Wittmann, 1997;Carvalho-Zilse and Kerr, 2004). We suggest that these occasional episodes of polygyny may occur when multiple virgin queens emerge and leave on their mating flights around the same time, thereby exploiting the short window during which newly mated queens may be accepted by the workers (Koedam, 1995;.…”

“…The dispersal role performed by stingless bee males has been fairly reported (Bruening 1990;Paxton 2000;Cameron et al 2004;Carvalho-Zilse and Kerr 2004;Velthuis et al 2005;Cortopassi-Laurino 2007;Kraus et al 2008;Mueller et al 2012;Francisco et al 2013). It has been demonstrated that T. angustula males in particular can fly from 612 to 1677 m away from their natal nest to a male aggregation area for reproduction (Santos et al 2016).…”

“…Witter and Wittmann (1997) described a polygynic colony in Plebeia wittmanni in which a new queen started oviposition while the older one was still alive and laying eggs. Carvalho-Zilse and Kerr (2004) reported a similar case for M. scutellaris, and recently Alves et al (2010) reported on a polygynic colony of M. quadrifasciata in which eight egg-laying queens coexisted in a colony for ca. four months.…”

“…Queens of Melipona compressipes and M. scutellaris, for example, have a maximum longevity of 84 months (7 years) (Carvalho-Zilse and Kerr, 2004). This reduced turnover of queens could help to maintain the relatedness among nestmate workers stable over time.…”
