Intraventricular hemorrhage in very low birth weight infants: associated risk factors and outcome in the neonatal period

Abstract: Intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) is a severe complication in very low birth weight (VLBW) newborns (NB). With the purpose of studying the incidence of IVH, the associated risk factors, and the outcomes for these neonates, we studied all the VLBW infants born in our neonatal unit. Birth weight, gestational age, presence of perinatal asphyxia, mechanical ventilation, length of hospitalization, apnea crisis, hydrocephalus, and periventricular leukomalacia were analyzed. The diagnosis of IVH was based on ultrasou… Show more

“…The prevalence of PIVH in our study is in accordance with the data reported in the literature, which vary from 15% to 37% in more recent years, with the higher frequency being associated with smaller birth weight and younger GA 3,7,13 . The frequency of PIVH was similar in both institutions, which was not expected, because there was a significant difference with regard to the weight of the newborns between these institutions.…”

“…Risk factors for IVH in this population include high fraction of inspired oxygen in the first 24 h of life, pneumothorax and early onset of sepsis, with lower arterial pressure of carbon dioxide and antenatal steroid administration serving as protective features [11]. Further demographic factors associated with lower incidence of IVH include African American race, utilization of prenatal care, older maternal age, delivery by cesarean section, increasing birth weight and gestational age, and female gender [11,12,13]. …”

“…14 According to Dincsoy MY et al 82 low birth weight newborns showed higher incidence of ICH among hypothermic infants during 1 week of life (34/82 versus 20/82, p<0.02), but the study regarded hypothermia as a manifestation of ICH during subsequent follow up neonatal period. 6 So, the current study correlates of higher incidence of ICH associated with hypothermia comparison to normothermic infants.…”
