The first record of Lutzomyia longipalpis (Lutz & Neiva, 1912) (Diptera: Psychodidae: Phlebotominae) in the State of Paraná, Brazil

Abstract: Introduction:We report the first find of Lutzomyia longipalpis in the State of Paraná, Brazil. Methods: The specimens were captured in the urban area of the municipality of Foz do Iguaçu, with Falcão light traps, in domiciliary and peridomiciliary areas of 61 properties, on two consecutive nights from 18:00 to 06:00hs in March 2012. Results: We captured 40 specimens of Lu. longipalpis and 54 specimens of other sandfly species. Conclusions: This find expands knowledge of the geographical distribution of this sa… Show more

“…A recent study (CARVALHO et al, 2014) using ecological niche modeling predicts southward expansion of L. flaviscutellata in South America because of climate change. Several studies have investigated phlebotomine fauna in Paraná State (GOMES & GALATI, 1977;TEODORO et al, 1993;TEODORO et al, 1999;OLIVEIRA et al, 2000;DIAS-SVERSUTTI et al, 2007;SILVA et al, 2008;CERINO et al, 2009;REIS et al, 2011;CRUZ et al, 2012;SANTOS et al, 2012;MEMBRIVE et al, 2012;CRUZ et al, 2013;MELO et al, 2013); none reported L. (L.) amazonensis vectors. Taking into account two autochthonous cases (one human and one canine) of leishmaniasis by L. (L.) amazonensis in North Paraná, more studies about phlebotomine fauna must be made in this region, now using Disney traps with rodents as baits (DORVAL et al, 2007), because L. flaviscutellata is strongly attracted to rodents (LAINSON & SHAW, 1968;SHAW & LAINSON, 1972;CARVALHO et al, 2014).…”

“…The second sampling was performed between June 2013 and July 2013, where 376 urban domiciled dogs were selected from 20 localities located near the Paraguay border, Paraná River, and the central and peripheral regions of the city. The households were selected based on the data from the entomological survey performed by the Ninth Health Region, Paraná State (SANTOS et al, 2012). The EDTA blood samples were collected from all dogs and popliteal lymph node puncture was performed on dogs exhibiting clinical symptoms of VL.…”

“…As Puerto Iguazú, Argentina, was the first city of the tri-border area to register both L. longipalpis vector (SALOMÓN et al, 2011) and autochthonous CVL cases in 2011 (ACOSTA et al, 2015), a study on the vector and CVL was initiated in Foz do Iguaçu. In 2012, an entomological study verified the presence of the L. longipalpis vector and the city was classified as a receptive vulnerable silent area for VL (SANTOS et al, 2012). The first autochthonous case of human visceral leishmaniasis (HVL) was confirmed in the city of Foz do Iguaçu in 2015 (PINA TRENCH et al, 2016).…”

“…Autochthonous cases of human VL have been reported in Altônia, and the sand fly vector has been observed in Foz do Iguaçu (CAT et al, 1973(CAT et al, /1974AYALA et al, 1980;SANTOS et al, 2012). To date, there have been no reports of autochthonous cases in dogs; however, alien cases have been recorded in the state (SOCCOL et al, 2009b).…”
