Molecular detection of Treponema pallidum sp. pallidum in blood samples of VDRL-seroreactive women with lethal pregnancy outcomes: a retrospective observational study in northern Brazil

Abstract: Molecular detection of Conclusions:The high frequency of syphilis in the group studied indicates the fragility of the service of infection diagnosis, treatment and monitoring, compromising epidemiological control. Keywords: Syphilis. Lethal pregnancy outcomes. PCR. VDRL. Show more

“…Among women with fetal loss, a higher frequency of detection of bacterial DNA was recorded in mothers with early (active) syphilis 11. A significant association was found between stillbirths and early maternal syphilis, and miscarriages and latent maternal syphilis.…”

“…The serum samples were submitted to the FTA-Abs IgG, ELISA IgG and FTA-Abs IgM tests, a procedure described by Casal et al 11. The DNA of T pallidum was detected using a nested PCR (nPCR) to amplify an external region of 291 bp described by Casal et al 11 and an internal region of 121 bp of the polA gene.…”

“…The sensitivity and specificity of the molecular PCR test results are affected by the type of specimen, the PCR method, and the target gene used. (10,11) Specimens that may be used for the Treponema pallidum PCR test in secondary syphilis are exudates from syphilitic lesions and blood. The sensitivity of PCR with smears from lesions of secondary syphilis reaches 80% and the specificity 98.6%.…”
